You won't be able to live in Manhattan on a teacher's salary unless you have some financial help or have roommates.
As a NYC teacher if you only have a bachelors degree your staring salary will be about $44-$45K year. If you have a Masters Degree you'll start around $50-$53K...with that being said...Manhattan is prob. not the best area to live...all your $$$ will go towards rent.
If you want to live close to the city...look into Queens. You can live and work in Queens and still be 15-40 min. subway ride into Manhattan depending on where you live.
I currently teach in Flushing Queens and many teachers I work with live in Astoria. You may want to look there and the surrounding areas Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City. Forest Hills is nice too...but a bit more expensive.
Also, many teachers who live in the city commute and teach out on Long Island...you may want to look into it because they pay about $10K more per year. Nassau County has some nice areas for young people and it would be a lot cheaper than Manhattan...on the weekends you can take the Long Island Rail Road into the city (30min). Look into Long Beach...
Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
Here's the payscale for NYC teachers:

Move to Queens, most parts are cheaper than Manhtattan. Most people recommend Astoria and Sunnyside in Queens. You could come teach at my school, in Long Island City there are many high schools where you can work at (this is in queens). I don't think you can live in Manhattan fresh out of college on a teacher's salary and still pay the bills.

Look into Brooklyn or Queens. You could find something affordable in Astoria or Williamsburg, both of which are right next to Manhattan, if you are willing to get a roomate.
Living in Manhattan will be very difficult unless you are willing to live in either a very small place or live in a bad area.

No. NYC teachers and 99.99999% of the population can't afford to live in Manhattan. Try Brooklyn or Queens.

You're better off trying for queens or the bronx. Nassau county is still close and you could find an apartment for a decent price if you look hard enough.
