26miles 385 yards .
This distance is not based on the legend of Phidippides running from the battle fields of Marathon to Sparta.
But was set in 1908 during the Olympics in the UK by the Princess of Wales . Originally the race was to be run over 25 miles from Windsor to White city (in London). As the Princess thought it would be good for her kids to see the start of the race and moved the start back to Windsor castle , an extra mile.
Then not to be out done Queen Alexander wanted the race to end at the royal box , so added on the 385 yards around the track so that the finish was under the royal box..
