The main difference in Europe and The USA is the government. There are similar governments through most of Europe, but each have a relatively small area to control and not much diversity in the population. European nations can make a government that includes the culture of the people (in most cases), therefore creating a more stable government. In the US, government must make concessions to many different groups, and this has lead to more and more intrest groups trying to protect their own rights.

I recently lived in Chicago and was surprised by the segregation in the city. It is naturally becoming more and more segregated, and that is a problem.

As far as Spain is concerned, I think it has great traditions, and incorporates new traditions as the people change. I was an exchange student living in Madrid and in Valladolid. I think the most important thing Spain needs to do is not loose their cultural identity within the European Union. Cooperation without conformity would keep Spain as one of the more comendable nations of the world.

When I was in the US Navy I spent a lot of time on the Mediterranean... most of my free time was spent in Italy and they were very friendly and open people. I had a great time there... the two times I had time free to travel in Spain I found that when I got out where the people lived they too were most friendly... as a sailor I had some bad encounters in the bigger cities in every country... but when I went out to the small towns I was always welcomed and treated very well... Franco was in power in Spain at the time and we had been warned to not stray far... but I did anyway... and never once had a bad encounter with the real people of Spain... except of course in the big city where there are always those waiting to take advantage of the Tourists and wandering sailors... but the real people invited me into their homes and took me around to see the sights a "tourist" never gets to see... I know things have changed in the last 40 yrs... but I would not think the real people have... I would like very much to go back and visit the people of Spain and Italy...... and there is one very nice girl on Malta I have always wondered about... Oh the memories of an old man.....

I think many countries in Europe (including Spain), are very civilized and peacful. Most countries such as France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden, are very liberal compared to the U.S. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but I get the idea that they are much more "progressive" than America. Many people call Europeans panzies because they are much more peacful than America, but that is a good thing. I want to live in Spain or Europe when I grow up. Simple enough for you?
