Here's How:
Slice onions into 1/4-inch wide rings.
Heat butter or combination of butter and oil in heavy skillet.
Add onions and a small amount of sugar (optional) and slowly cook over medium heat.
Cook until onions are caramel colored, stirring often, 30 to 40 minutes.
For more flavor, add a touch of vinegar at the end of cooking, stirring to deglaze the pan.

Tips:
Large, mild-flavored onions work best.
Carmelized onions can be frozen in an airtight container up to three months.

Add a bit of olive oil to a fry pan.Get the oil hot and add your chopped onion.
Cook till the onion starts to turn golden brown and they are carmelized.
Do this on med. heat and watch closely.

Just saute them in butter until limp, then add a big pinch of sugar and keep cooking them. They'll turn brown and have that carmelized taste.

add about 2 Tbl olive oil then add a slided onion over medhigh heat for about 5-8 mins they should have carmelized by then.

medium to medium low pan. 1 to 2 tblspn butter or canola oil. add your diced or sliced onions and stir ocassionaly till gb&d (golden brown and delicious)
Sometimes i add a scrape of real vanilla to round out the flavors.

i use my crock pot..a stick of butter and 4-5 onions....no need to watch them..overnight they will be perfectly golden and delicious..add some salt and a little sugar if desired...bon appetit!
