What do you think when people say that if you don't believe in god, you'll go to hell?

For me, it's illogical.
I wouldn't say I believe or don't believe in god, but if god exists and he's as good as people claim, I'll go to heaven anyhow.

If god exists and he sends one who just doesn't believe in him to hell, he's not god. He's a gangster. He's a kind of Don Corleone.

Imagine a doctor who falls in love with a janitor.
He never shows up nor talks to her.
He just watches her from distance.
One day, she marries another guy.

Then the doctor is angry about that.
He is mad that she does not realize he exists and she marries someone else.

Later she gets sick. She goes to see him.
He says 'No. I won't help you. You do not believe in me.'

What kind of doctor is this?
What kind of man is this?

Is understanding/ generous/ forgiving god
supposed to be like
this self-centric narrow minded doctor?

Your logic is excellent and your examples clear. A person who believes as you describe is ignorant of the true nature of our Heavenly Father.

There is a God, but He will do everything He can to further our growth and development. Our relationship with Him is familial. We are His offspring and He prepared this earth with all of its unfair conditions to help us reach our divine potential.

The doctor and janitor thing was probably one of the worst analogies ever. God has never hidden in the darkness. His proof is all around us. We all know that if we saw on Fox News that Jesus was walking New York around preforming miracles, people like you would try and reason that He's a fake, even if they had proof on camera. God is a forgiving God. How do we know this, HE FORGAVE US. God loves us, that is why he made us, that is why he gave us Jesus, whom we didn't deserve. It's not that if you do not believe in God you go to hell, it's really if you choose not to go to heaven you go to hell. We've all been informed, it's a choice we all have. The only thing that stops God from saving everyone is our one free will. I will pray for you and I hope to see you at home.

First off, I tell them just because you don't believe in God, that doesn't mean He doesn't exist. That's just your opinion. Secondly, I don't tell them that they'll go to hell, because only God can decide that.

Edit: (Just read your doctor story.) In your scenario, I could say the doctor is at fault for not approaching her. But he is only human and was either too shy or couldn't take rejection so he never talked to her. Or maybe it was the girl's fault; maybe she was too wrapped up in herself or she was too busy to notice someone else waiting for her to talk to him.

But I understand how you're applying this to God. So in the this scenario, God has more than made His presence known to us through the bible. Perhaps some are just too busy to notice Him trying to reach out to them. (This would apply to my first sentence. Let's say the janitor's friend tells her, "hey did you notice that doctor watching you from the corner?" She says, "I didn't see a doctor there, so he couldn't have been there." The friends says, "yes he was really there. I know he was there.")

It nevertheless works on the instant. Many have faith it and a super style of instruction manual their lives by ability of this eternal assertion. no longer that it works for easily everybody. there are a number of that're of a clean age the place such issues relatively make no experience in any respect. i assume it become stable sufficient interior the previous days some time past while this entire element formed and mandatory to have human beings on its area. in case you probably did no longer have faith in God lower back then you definately in all probability might have wanted to get to hell quickly just to get removed from what the human beings might do to you.

"What do you think when people say that if you don't believe in god, you'll go to hell?"

It has happened to me only here at R&S, where my respect for Fundies is so everlasting low--I would say less than zero--that I simply ignore it.

Your analogy was interesting.

There are 162 references to HELL in the New Testament alone, over 70 of those spoken by Jesus Himself.

" He that believes (the gospel) and is baptized SHALL BE SAVED; he that believes not SHALL BE DAMNED ". - Jesus

"So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth". - Jesus (Matt. 13:49)
