I know what you're saying mate, I bet you your thinking about Russia and its on a roll just now because of oil. Many people in the west still think Russia is still in a mess, they are so wrong. Russian Army could sweep through Finland, Sweden and Norway without much hassle, then Russian marines invade the far north of Scotland from Norway, then a couple of weeks later the Russian flag is flying over London. British could fly troops in from Iraq and Afghanistan but they are only lightly armed and not much match for the Russian war machine. Tanks would take weeks to be shipped back to Britain to counter the invasion and most armour in Britain have been taken out by Russian air force. So the United States as lost its greatest allie.

Good question.
The Armed forces are traditionally split into two areas, one that deploys abroad whilst the other is for protection duties be that fisheries, skies or land.
If any country were to try and invade then the Home forces would be mobilised. When people talk about our "overstretched army" they are refering to "ready to deploy" forces. We have Military aircraft based hear on a Quick Reaction Alert for any unidentified transgressor into our airspace (After that we have Hawk training AC that can be equipped for home defence even the Red Arrows!!) and also the same within the Navy and army units based around the UK and Germany that could be mobilised for uk defence.

your question said "Britain it self", so there are just a few options, one is there are a small armed invation of a foreign army, then the regular troops will take charge of them, they win and everything is normal again, other escenario: regular troops can manage this invation, so the goverment will use civilians to form a second line to defend the country.

the second option is the regular forces can not manage the situation, and civilians neither can, the Euro community then will dispatch troops to support Britain, I mean NATO troops will the first ones to help, Americans will not help because they are not interested in people, their only think in their own interests, only if Britain still be useful to theirs plans maybe they send some latinos or Afroamericans, but their are needed in Asia at this moments.

So, dont wait for help of USA, France and Germany will answer and help, because now and in the future all the countries will only be a big nation: EUROPE...

Take care yourself

We couldnt and we wouldnt go nuclear. Theres no point invading us anymore anyway our government is just a puppet government overseen by Washington and King Dubya.

For a country born out of anti-imperialism those Yanks dont half seem very intent on building an empire.

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

to us civvies it would seem chances are minimal but troops can be back in 24 hrs and a bit longer for equipment but there is still a full fighting force here //and as you say nuclear comes into it but you don't use it in your own country against the enemy

Although it is very unlikely to happen it we probally couldn't if we were up against a well armed foe who could send lots of men against us very quickly. We wouldn't be able to form militias or resistence groups because there are practically no guns available to be legally owned.

Same as the other persons answer, the USA would annihilate anyone who messes with the British.

I would buy myself an AK47 and an RPG over the internet and a load of ammo and fight back, and hopefully so would everyone else and we could fight a guerrilla war just like were facing in Iraq.
