To unknown friend, I don't know what you are talking about, our heritage is Spaniard (language ), Taino Indians (words, handcrafting, cuisine and music instruments) and African (words, music, instruments, handcrafting and cuisine) we have commerce with the USA, from which we are part, but, Do you see English as our official language? No, we do make commerce with China, Taiwan, England, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and many others, besides that many people from all over the world have made Puerto Rico as their 2ND home and country, but you don't see us acting like them, we act as we are Puerto Ricans, we speak Spanish as Puerto Ricans, we eat and cook as Puerto Ricans, we walk, dance and do everything as Puerto Ricans, In which way you have seen us acting like Germans, Chinese, Dominicans or any other nationality? We are what we are, Puerto Ricans and we are proud f it and respect all nationalities, but there's no way we'll act like what we aren't. We've been part of USA since 1898 and in many ways they tried us to think as them making English as the official language and the obligatory use of it in everything, schools, government, business, etc; but our ethnicity didn't permit that, we kept our roots and traditions ahead these changes and in 1950 we started the Common Wealth of Puerto Rico, where we, being part of the USA, were permitted to have our own government, laws and constitution, keeping our traditions and language. Besides the rest we are American citizens since the Law Jones Act was signed in 1940 and we are thanked for our American cizenship, but before than anything we are Puerto Ricans and that's something that no one will ever change. So next time that you decide to make a comment about my island I invite to come down here to take you to meet what the real Puerto Rico is, our people, our country, our traditions and uses, I bet that once you have met all that you won't want ot leave. Then you'll learn how to make diferences among our traditions and history and the others. Gracias.

I recently came back from Puerto Rico, I was there for the Salsa Congress. I enjoyed this beautiful Island, that much that I want to return and stay now for a proper holiday (ie one that lasts more than several weeks).

Been to several places around the world but this is one place that I felt at home with the people, their culture and enjoyed their food, dancing/music and the beach!!!

The language is Spanish and its one I'm trying to learn so a bigger bonus if you want to learn how to speak it.

You must visit the main tourist areas and enjoy it. The Isla Verde area is nice for the tourists as alot of apartments are on the beach and the views are beautiful.

But wherever you go, just enjoy the culture and eat traditional Puerto Rican food.

Hope you enjoy it.

Being Fully Puerto Rican and living in Puerto Rico, I have to say that there are so many things that are beautiful and worth noticing in Puerto Rico. It is a great place to visit. Your never bored and its absolutely breathtaking. First of all the food is great, especially if your not on a diet! The beaches, the rainforest, El Yunque[gets its own category, its awesome], the people there are so nice and your always having fun! My culture is so imporant to me and probably to alot of other people. We have our own slang and way of communicating. The music there is the best and so imporatnt to the culture. anothing so imporant is probably family. I have family in Puerto Rico and every year, all of my family gets to gether in Puerto Rico for holidays like Christmas and its the best feeling in the world. Family is so important in Puerto Rican and genereally Hispanic culture. Another great thing about Puerto Rico, is simply beacause its so relaxing. The fact that you can tie a hammock to 2 trees and just lay there is amazing. Its best that you can breath it all in. The feeling is wonderful. And the weather is almost always nice. People are always saying that the sites are the best in puerto rico, but there are so many little things the makes Puerto Rico well, great to see.

If your looking for sites to see, I named some of them earlier. El yunque, all different rainforests, beaches. My grandparents are from Camuey, so a realli nice place to visit is The caves. one of my favorite places is Old San Juan.If you are coming to PR, check La Parguera, Rainforest El Yunque, The Lighthouse of Rincon, Vieques, El Morro. Ponce feels very historic and its such a nice place to visit.

What Javy said....

Plus, if you go, get out of San Juan. Go over to Boquerron... go to Ponce... for those who think it is too commercialized, you didn't see the true island. You go inland, to the middle, and you experience the country part of Puerto Rico. It is quiet (except for los gallos!!!), beautiful, tropical, and the people are wonderful. You can go to the Caves of Camuy and see something magnificent... you can go to El Yunque and hike and experience the ONLY rainforest in the US.

The problem is that most people only go to San Juan, Old San Juan, and they don't get to truly experience Puerto Rico.

When you do visit PR. travel outside San Juan. That's when you will truley enjoy Puerto Rico. People who say their culture is gone has never done that. I visited here in 1996, for 3 weeks. When i went back to NY i gave my 2wks notice and moved here. I've been here for 11 yrs. And never have i felt their tradition is gone. People here are awesome. The food is (oh my God) DELICIOUS.... They do speak both languages here.. And so eager to help out the tourist with the spanish. I visited so many places. I would never leave here. I love it.

Yea I've been there... Heck, I was born here and live here. I have gone to every part of the island and I'm not bored of it yet. But it's the simple things that get to me. Like lying down on a hammock on my backyard. Looking at the clear, cloudless blue skies, the calm wind whispering a beautiful song into my ear, and listening to birds chirping as if everything were full of life. It's a truly wonderful place.

Yes I have been there and I found it too commercialized.

When I go to another country I like to experience their customs and history but Puerto Rico has had their customs and history taken away by commercialism mostly.

I found it very difficult to find any of their heritage within Puerto Rico. It's a shame, otherwise the weather was nice.

P.R. is the best, I lived there for 13 years. The beaches are lovely ,the rain forest, they have the largest Shopping Mall in the Caribbean. The food is good, Old San Juan is beautiful. I can't wait to go again.
