I read that book too, Pilgrim. Don't let these peoples dictionary explanation of "Liberal" deceive you. We know what a Liberal is, and it's not described in the dictionary. We know that liberalism originates from angry people - simply angry by nature, and looking for something to focus that anger on. Even to the point of demoralizing and endangering their own country.

Liberalism is the larger theory of citizen participation in government, protected rights and freedoms guaranteed by a constitution, and forms the basis for conservative values.

Liberalism is the foundation of everything Michael Savage uses to gain celebrity and sell books. He should have said "Militant extremism of any KIND is a mental disorder" which is something he qualifies as; an extremist with a militant ideology.

As part of your further education, perhaps you should do a little research on what conservatism is. It is in fact what liberalism used to mean. Modern liberalism means progressivism, either social, economic, or political reform of a certain kind.

Much of conservatism is similar to libertarianism, which is what old school liberalism meant. You can't bash the entire ideology of liberalism, because that includes conservatism and libertarianism.

It is as though doctor Savage considers liberalism and conservatism to be two ultimate extremes. This is wrong, the extremes are anarchy and totalitarianism. Liberalism and conservatism are two different flavors of moderate political ideology, and I am saddened to see those of us who should be more mature and tolerant denigrate and demonize one another for choosing slightly different political views.

Instead of focusing on our differences, as partisan hacks would like you to do, focus on our common values and our shared strengths. Tearing this nation apart and blaming the other half does nothing. Meanwhile, other nations are making political, economic, and social progress, while we bash each other.

Time to take a grow up pill.

John Wayne would be one of the last people to put on such a silly slogan. True Americans are free thinkers that don't follow slogans or trends.

Quite conveniently, John Wayne and Jefferson are dead, and can't argue with that. Neither can Kennedy either, who conservatives sometimes claim would be a Republican today. This post is a load of claptrap which would not convince anyone but a kindergartner of anything.

Savage, like all of the right wing radio nitwits have managed to re-define the world 'liberal' and the concept of 'liberalism' into an all purpose pejoritive noun. It's something like redefining the world 'truth' to mean propaganda. I feel sorry for the ditto-heads for allowing themselves to fall into this trap of screwball belief. The alternative to a 'liberal' society, liberal as defined by any standard dictionary, is to enter a world based on superstition, deception, rule by force, hate, ignorance and a dark age of all against all. Michael Savage has hit the nail all right....right on the...point. Look up the word liberalism in the dictionary and embrace it.....civilization in the best sense of the word will be lost without it!

Exactly what do you think "liberalism" means??Here's how my Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines "liberalism": A THEORY IN ECONOMICS EMPHASIZING INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM FROM RESTRAINT AND...BASED ON FREE COMPETITION, THE SELF-REGULATING MARKET, AND THE GOLD STANDARD.
-or- A POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY BASED ON BELIEF IN PROGRESS, THE ESSENTIAL GOODNESS OF MAN, AND THE AUTONOMY OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND STANDING FOR THE PROTECTION OF POLITICAL AND CIVIL LIBERTIES.
In the same dictionary, by the way, "conservatism" is defined as A POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY BASED ON TRADITION AND SOCIAL STABILITY, STRESSING ESTABLISHED INSTITUTIONS AND PREFERRING GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT TO ABRUPT CHANGE; THE TENDENCY TO PREFER AN EXISTING SITUATION.
So, from my perspective, a conservative might be the one with a mental disorder, afraid of change or improvement and sticking to the 'staus quo', regardless of how untimely or outmoded such tradition might be. A liberal, on the other hand, appears to open to fresh ideas, optimistic toward new solutions to age-old problems, and enough of a progressive thinker to know that change is necessary and inevitable to maintain a free and prosperous society.
It seems that liberals would like more people to share the wealth and enjoy the benefits of our free America while conservatives believe in an "All for one...ME" philosophy that restricts and excludes the majority of Americans in sharing this nation's bounty.
If I weren't such a staunch independent who abhors BOTH the liberal and conservative persuasions, I'd definitely be drawn to liberalism instead of that 'wacko' conservative agenda put forth by stubborn, unchangeable ditto heads.
