I see a lot of people at the gym that work out but are by no means pushing themselves.

I was under the impression that in order for you to get muscle growth you really need to push yourself. To the extent that your last couple reps really take all you got. ( Obviously you should practice safety and stuff as well )

My question is if you aren't pushing yourself that hard can you really expect any muscle growth?

I also know that some ppl will do less weight and just do more reps for toning. So i am not talking about that, really.

that is the 2nd main reason why the majority of people never even come close to achieving the physical changes that they desire. if at the end of the year you are using the same training loads as you were in the beginning there will be little physical changes in the body even with a good diet. however most people that do not exercise at a high level of intensity do not make sufficient changes in the diet either.

for maximum increases in cardiovascular performance, strength, muscle mass or a drastic decrease in body fat it takes both.

Not everyone in a gym is trying to bulk up like those professional bodybuilders.

Lifting lighter weights using more reps will tone existing muscle. You may be seeing folks doing just that. You can't tell what their goals are, or why they're at the gym, unless you ask them.

no... a more effective program, with the right recovery methods. Of course it takes hard work to get to your goals, but some gain muscles faster than others.

I train harder than everyone at the gym.. but i by no means go crazy all the time. 8)

of course you will get some results, because you are working.
but your results won't be nearly as outstanding if you don't push yourself.

maybe people at the gym are self-conscious about how they look, and are afraid to look weak, struggling or funny if there forcing out their last couple of reps.
