Epsom salts helps pull the lactic acid out of the muscles, lactic acid is what causes a great deal of pain on the muscles. It does not have it any negative side effects and it makes a tremendous difference on how you feel after a bath.

Epsom Salts are just magnesium salts. They do help reduce swelling, but probably no better than just soaking in plain old warm water. They have other uses for sores or open wound soaking, and also have a laxative effect when taken orally as directed by the package.
