Usually cats can clean themselves well enough without having to bath them, and the occasion clean with a pet wipe is sufficient. However, there are times when a bath is essential, such as when the cat has oil on it, as pointed out by another contributor.
It's notoriously difficult to bath cats, although I have one who will tolerate it but only if my partner or I strip off and join him in the bath. Whoever's in with him strokes in the cat shampoo while the other mans the shower head. We've had no need to bath our other 3 for ages ... thankfully as it's a traumatic experience for the cats and us!
I'd be interested to see if anyone has a good strategy.

If your cat has become extremely filthy, (such as engine grease from climbing up in a car) it could make itself ill trying to clean itself. We had to do this once. We used slightly warm water and put a towel down in the bottom of the sink. Gently put her in. at first she didn't realize what was happening, and when she did, she siezed the towel in her claws rendering her helpless. We worked as quickly and calmly as possible, and it was soon over. We had a warm towel waiting for her. She NEVER went outside again, and I have never let any since then go out at all. Never had to give another bath, but this worked well. Good brushing and combing to keep down the hairballs is all that has been required since.
Good luck

All cats react differently to baths. Most don't like a bath, and can get so stressed out they will do things they normally wont do and may even hurt themselves or you. I would find a pet groomer that can give your cat a bath. They are professional, and have the facilities to hold him down so he wont hurt himself or anyone else. Who knows, he might even be good and enjoy it!

If he hates a bath done bath him.....it's not necessary unless he's got some noxious stuff on him.....in that case, use warm water and a flannel or petwipes. Cat's Hate baths...even with bubbles and scented candles!!!!

Haha, I tried this when I was a kid. Don't attempt to give your cat a bath. You will simply wind up with scratches everywhere.

If you're speaking in terms of "how do I get my cat to not scratch me?" then I'm afraid you're out of luck. Some cats like water, but most (obviously) don't. You don't generally need to bathe them anyway unless they got into something or peed on themself or something. I have kittens that I need to give baths to every week because of incontinence in one of them and they DO NOT like it. I have scars, but with cats it's to be expected. If they need it you just need to hold them down in a shallow bath and pour water on them.

Cats hate baths and DO NOT need them. Their daily grooming, i.e., licking, is all they need. They groom about 85% of their waking hours. If a cat does not groom, it is sick and needs to go to the vet.
SO do NOT bath the cat!

I have never had a pet, but I have ideas always swarming in my head.
Maybe, don't put her in a bath, just take a DAMP cloth and put a little shampoo on it...rub it together, and act like you are petting her??
Then get the same one damp with no shampoo, and rinse her off, get another towel and dry her off?
