My son went to the doctor last week and they did a CBC on him. On friday the doctor called me and told me that he had a low WBC. His was at 4.0 and the normals are between 5.0 and 16.0. I went to the doctors office and obtained a copy of the CBC and differentials, but this is all greek to me. The absolute neutrophils were also low, they were 1080 and the norm is between 1500 and 1800. The doctor told me to bring him backin for another cbc in 2 weeks and that the low wbc could mean he has a viral infection or it could be an early sign of leukemia, I am freaking out, I don't want my baby to have to go thru treatments for cancer, somebody please tell me what to do. Should I be worried, what should I be looking for, watching for, Is there any testing that we can do in the mean time to find anything else out. I am paincked. Please Help.

Usually low white blood cell level takes place when there are some immune disturbances or when marrow functioning is abnormal (it is where white blood cells are formed) because of infection, malignant formations or medicament effects.
Some doctors are sure that low white blood cell level indicates a viral infection. Sorry.

if there is no history of Leukemia in your family, it is unlikely that that is the problem, besides the counts are not low enough, there would also be a decrease in eosinophils and red cells if that were the case. More likely is he just has a viral infection that the symptoms haven't shown yet. It can take a week or two for symptoms of viral infection to show up. Try not to worry, it won't change the results and the boy will sense your worry and that won't help him either. The odds are against Leukemia. But the doctor has to tell you the worse case scenarios for legal purposes.....be calm it's going to be ok.

White Blood Count is sometimes a sign on Leukemia. HOWEVER, no one can diagnose your son on yahoo answers. Also, your uncle is your son's great uncle so the chance of hereditary disease between the two is slim. Just work with the doctors and support your son with whatever it is. I truly wish you the best of luck. I hope your son only has something minor. There's a good chance he's fine, there are alot of medical scares that amount to nothing.
