Dust the whipped cream with a little cocoa powder, and shaved chocolate curls are fine too.

The trouble with carmelized pacans is that they would make a crunchy-chewy texture in a smoothe pie... personally, I would find that to be unpleasant (though I am sure it would taste delicious!)
Stick with chocolate curls since they are soft- or maybe some fancy caramel or melted chocolate drizzle. Practice drizzling in a pattern- like a square or circular lattice of some sort... both colors would also be nice! Those colors on a soft layer of cream would be pretty!
Good luck!

Make or buy some chocolate whipped cream and put a border of it around the crust or drizzle chocolate syrup.

I'd skip those pecans, but that's just me personally. Can you find candied flowers? Those would be pretty on a dark pie. Or if you can find and know how to use marzipan, that would lend a little nutty flavor without being too overwhelming.
Just my thoughts! :)

melt some choclate, and brush it on some VERY clean leaves. when the choclate dries, peel it off, and then u will have a choclate leaf. if the choclate gets stuck to the leaf, put cling wrap on top of the leaf and THEN brush the choclate on top! good luck with ur contest!

whip egg whites, dip pecans in then in cinnamon and powdered sugar, place on baking sheet, bake until crisp
this is something like the hot pecans they sell at Navy Pier in Chicago, and fairs and carnivals.
