I don't think you have a choice about getting it or not. Though, just because it runs in your family doesn't mean you would get it. My sister has schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia does not always manifest. First, you have to have the right gene combination. If you don't, you can't get it. Those with this disease don't always have kids that get it, and it's also rare that more than one sib will have it. Second, it's thought that some early life stress event sets it off, but no one knows for sure or if that holds after a young age. Avoiding stress couldn't hurt. Last, if you do get symptoms, see a doctor immediately. There are a variety of meds that can help, and the sooner they are started, the higher probability that the progression will be slowed or stopped. There are people with this disease that do well enough on meds to live normal lives.

OK generally there is no way to avoid becoming a victim; however certain diets that are low in refined sugars (ie junk food) seem to lessen its gripping affects. Remember schizophrenia is not a death sentence for you brain. 1/4 of its victims go through it and come out cured on meds and another 1/4 of its victims will improve considerably on medication and be able to function in the world. (the bummer is the 10% who die the 15% that don't improve and the other 25% who improve only modestly on meds)
anyway if your really worried about it you should go get tested around 15 since it tends to hit in adolescensce...so if your over 18 I wouldn't worry about it

You are already a "victim," in the sense that you are at risk for the condition. If you are past your 20's, your chances are a lot less, but will never be zero. Furthermore, there is a wide spectrum of symptoms from hardly noticeable to life-impairing. You need to be paying attention to what people think about your mental status. You will probably not be able to judge it yourself.
Consider giving someone you trust a "springing durable power of attorney" with psychotropic medical authorization power and psychiatric admission power, if a psychiatrist finds you are having a psychiatric episode.

either you have it or you don't. if you have it you can take meds, but that's pretty much it. it's actually good you know it runs in your family. if you start feeling like somebody is following you, go to the doctor. if you feel like somebody is trying to kill you, go to the doctor. go to the doc right away before it has a chance to progess. the longer it's left untreated, the quicker it'll progress

You can't. If you think you are having problems get an evaluation. The condition is caused from a neurotransmitter imbalance in the brain. It is treatable.
