Size of an Army means nothing, it is the ability to use it effectively which wins battles.

Lebanon hasnt been an effective Army for some time now. They were crippled for years by infighting among the various factions and interference from Syria.

A More useful scenario than this would be if Lebanons Army was strong, would it rid itself of Hezb. and Syrian interference?

Lebanon has allowed itself to be used as a Base of Operations against Israel, therefore Lebanon takes the risk to its citizens of Israeli counterstrikes, and really shouldnt be surprised when they happen.

If the Lebanese Government and People had any spine, they would rid themselves of Hezbollah, & Syrian interlopers, sadly, they lack it

I suppose you might have some sort of even more outrageous arms-race in the Middle East.

Israel would have folks back at the US Congress and on media screaming about the threat posed by militant elements of Lebanese society yada yada, it's a familiar routine by know.

For Lebanon, of course, the smart thing to do would be to allocate funds for closer economic integration with Turkey/Northern Syria and Greece. An enforced disengagement policy for those in the south , where a firm land ownership and farming setup must be imposed whereby large farms which are closely monitored buffer the land just north of Israel. Keeping militants out of these areas and securing that neck of the woods would make it so that Lebanon can simply move on and Israel could be left to it's own devices.

Given that the map is not anything less than convoluted and tortured mishmash of sovereignties in the immediate Golan etc, the UN for better or worse has played an essential role for most if not all of the time its had forces deployed.

I believe very strongly that the US should seek within the next 4-8 years to terminate all military / economic aid abroad unless it is demonstrably in OUR interests to provide it.

If some piddly country goes the way of the Dodo we cannot be concerned. As happened when we got less militarily involved in other countries (Germany, Japan and most recently Korea) , they prospered.

Failure to do so strongly implies that the nature of the state so funded was founded on untenable or unstable principles or not well founded originally.

While I don't think this is the case for Israel, I do think forcing them to rationally deal with their neighbors is anathema to current hard-line Israeli thinking and why should they, they have a virtually unlimited piggy bank in the form of the misinformed US taxpayer.

Many American writers and literary critics among many Tom Clancy comes to mind as having publicly stated that if peace were declared tomorrow and there was no Arab or neighboring aggression that Israel would tear itself apart in a few years.

Personally I suspect the reason they can't secure the peace after 50 years of lavish US military support, is that there is no compelling reason to do so.

Why stop doing whatever you are doing when it's being paid for by someone else. More succinctly we must address the fact that militarism IS the unifiying principle of Israel and that while Clancy may not be completely correct in so far as demographically speaking Israel will be just another an Arab state in just 5 or 6 years with a very large Jewish minority, it would create a serious shift in thinking and influence both in Israel and the US.

This is not per se I feel an anti-Jewish or anti-Israeli opinion but rather an examination of what has historically happened in previous situations. It's not the job of a good friend and ally to say everything is alright - even when it's not, it's to be honest and straightforward with your friends.

Country , US.

Firstly the Lebanese Army is largely Christians. That's why they were so shocked when the Israeli Air Force bombed thier towns instead of Hizb Allah.

US Furnished Nuclear, Chemicaland Biological Weapons the US Taxpayer gave Israel guarantee That it can continue to violate the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and over 30 UN Resolutions. It is and has been a danger to every other country in the middle east.

I am an American who believes that we should terminate all Foriegn and Military Aid to anyone period.

What could take place if my aunt had balls? could she grow to be my uncle? this could nicely be a pointless question. Lebanons militia forces are based around inner policing, which they can not seem to do ok. no person will placed money into Lebanon with the aid of fact it fairly is a haven for armed non secular/policital extremists. Their financial device sucks with the aid of fact of that. Compounding the subject is that with the aid of their loss of inner administration Israel gets compelled to return in and administration their territory for them on occasion just to end assaults posed from there. i think of that if that they had a extra useful military that replaced into waiting to regulate their inner affairs extra effectively then their united states could be plenty extra advantageous off. with the aid of their inner political ecosystem that's unlikely to take place. Lebanon is an significant staging factor for assaults into Israel. people who prefer to make assaults on Israel have placed government officers into the Lebanese government. It fairly doesnt remember, all that happens whilst those communities attack Israel from Lebanon is Israel responds and of direction wins. people on no account study i assume.

US here; I saw photos from the AP of the Lebanese army in action in the Northern Camps. and I could tell from the photos that they are not a very efficient fighting force. For example, their military vehicles and equipment appears to be a mixture of 1960's USA 5quarter trucks and old style jeeps (no humvees). I also saw some APC variants probably from the 70's surplus russian stuff. I saw one photo with 6 guys in an open jeep with no armor - it looked very ragtag to say the least.
I think they need better funding for equipment period.
