I used to indicate, then wait for an appropriate gap before moving across.
Spending some time on the M5 today I finally realised why it was taking me so long. The correct proceedure appears to be;
indicate (optional)
immediately move over into the lane you require (this may be one or more lanes at a time)
don't worry, it'l be fine, everyone slams on their breaks for you.
Worked so much better for the people I saw use this method!

slam on means to use your breaks suddenly and hard.
Don't worry people, I wouldn't do it this way- I just couldn't! But I was always quick to use my breaks to ensure an appropriate size space for those that did choose to drive in this way!

Its all approximately coaching and self assurance and being valuable the place you're going, in case you're indecisive or uncertain of your self the motorways are a mine field so its in simple terms much less confusing to stay independent, in lane 2, in case you already know the place you're going then you quite in simple terms decide for it in lane 4. despite the fact which you will in all likelihood discover that a huge p.c. of sluggish lane 2 drivers are on the cellular telephone

The appropriate and courteous way is to spot an opening of sufficient size. Move your car parallel to the opening. Then turn on your directional as you begin to move into the space to give the cars around you to know your intentions. You do have to assert yourself when moving in traffic, but if you continue to change lanes without signaling you'll run into the situation where both you and another car attempt to change lanes and occupy the same space at the same time. You won't like the outcome of that one..

Why dont you do like most idiots who drive on the road today!!!
Join the motorway,go straight into the middle/outside lane, dont bother to mirror check either and just sit there holding everyone up...................just to piss everyone off.
If i had my way i`d make them sit a re-test and then if they got caught again i`d ban them until they could prove they are worthy of a uk licence.
Its about time the police started pulling people over for this!!

The recommended procedure, while using the middle lane, is to match speeds with a continental lorry which is in the inside lane. He has a left-hand drive, and so cannot see you. In the fullness of time, you will be side-swiped into the outside lane.

I used to work with an old bloke who thought you joined the motorway, chose a lane and stuck to it until you came off at the appropriate exit!

This isn't the way to change lanes either - you should wait for a gap *first*, then indicate, then move across when it is safe to do so.

Oh sweetie, it can be real dangerous and a safe driver would never pull out and cause somebody to swerve. I would stick to mirror, signal then manourve. I use my horn at people who do that to me. Most people will see you indication and create a space for you. You can speed up or slow down accordingly to enter the gap.

I'm sorry, I don't understand this. What in the vehicle is broken, and how do you 'slam on' whatever it is?

You've got it wrong - on the motorway, it's manoeuvre, signal, mirror.
