Patient assistance programs are run by pharmaceutical companies to provide free medications to people who cannot afford to buy their medicine. RxAssist offers a comprehensive database of these patient assistance programs, as well as practical tools, news, and articles so that health care professionals and patients can find the information they need. All in one place.

The website to consult is http://www.rxassist.org. It has information on all of the pharmaceutical companies' programs and their requirements. I hope you find it helpful.

Speak with a pharmacist. They tend to know all the programs that are out there to assist the elderly. A lot of this is based on the income level of the patient.

Most doctors already allow generic substitution, so this is probably not part of the problem. A lot of problems these days are caused by the fact that drug companies pressure doctors to push the new drugs as soon as the old one becomes generic. I expect thumbs down from those in the medical field. lol.

Start with their physician and ask to switch to generic meds, and evaluate if they need all the meds that they are on.

Then look at Wal-mart they have a list of meds that are $4 per month. Also look into mail order options you will get three months of meds delivered to your parents home at a time.

All of the pharmaceutical companies have patient assistance programs to help people with the cost of medications. Look on each company's web site.

Finally, voice your concerns to your state representative and/or senator. If we do not speak out to our legislators this problem will never be solved.

Some companies will give medications for free to low income people. I believe you have to complete an application. Ask the doctor about this. If the doctor is not helpful, check with a Senior program in your area. They have people who know these types of things who can advise you. I believe they would be eligible for such a program.

If any of their meds are generic and they live near either a WalMart or a Target, WalMart for certain is offering generic meds for $4 a prescription. I just alerted my own elderly parents because my mother's meds are costing them a lot.

Are they ordering their meds through the mail? This is usually cheaper than at a pharmacy.
