It exists and would not be as easily defeated as the Iraqi military was.
The difference is that Iran with the exceptions of the F-14 parts we refuse to sell them, has maintained if not upgraded their equipment over the years vs. the devastation that had been wrought by the US after the 1st Gulf War on the Iraqi military.
The Iranian regular armed forces has an estimated 420,000 troops in three branches: Ground Forces, 350,000 troops; Navy, 18,000 sailors; and Air Force, 52,000 airmen. If you include the Revolutionary Guard they have upward of 540,000

um ashley iran just had a 8 year war with Iraq like 20 years ago, and the Iranian army is way better than the Iraqi, keep in mind that in the Iran Iraq war, most of the world includind the US were supporting Iraq, giving them money and weapons but Iran didnt have any support but did not lose the war. And at the time of the King in 1970s Irans Air Force Pilots were the best in flying the fighter jet Bobcat or Tomcat (sorry cant remember) a very difficult plane to fly

Boy its sick to see someone come out and claim Iran has not attacked anyone first in 200 years when soldiers in its employ are found in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian areas of Israel.

Iran's military is no match for the US unless they resort to chemical, biological weapons. Their only chance at a military victory in defending themselves from us is to draw Syria, Egypt and Jordan into the fray...the last two are unlikely. But they will try by drawing Israel into it thus creating the bloodiest holly war since the crusades.

Iran is not united as ScRubs proffesses. Over 70% of the population is under 30 years old, and a vast majority of those people want real political change in terms of government and policies. The Mullahs that are in power represent only a small minority, and in order to not lose their stranglehold of power, they govern with an iron fist. But alot of the people want more democratic ways, and the Mullahs know this.
As far as their military goes, they would be no match for a 1 on 1 match against the U.S., but with nuclear weapons it would be a different story. And with Russia's, Israel's and the rest of the Arab's worlds interests at stake, who knows what would transpire.

Discipline is the key. If they are well disciplined, they will be very dangerous to deal with. If not, it still won't be easy, but they will suffer great losses.

What about leadership. Seasoned, well trained, disciplined officers can make a great big difference. Toys of war are not all that is required.

In a nut shell, they should not be trivialized, but taken seriously, but no one is invincible.

I agree with john r. The youth of Iran loves the U.S. and would rather come to the U.S. than fight us. You will see the Iranian government violently overthrown before a war happens.

Ever been to Iraq? Retired Army, been there 3 times. US forces have captured Iranian Military IRGC who are funding the Shite based insurgent groups. The Iranian agenda in Iraq is nothing more than to kill Sunni's, Americans and to grab-up some prime Shite Real Estate. Their ultimate goal is to remove the Saudi Royal Family from power and to capture Mecca.

In Contrast, the Sunni based al Qaeda agenda in Iraq is nothing more than to kill Shite's, Americans and to grab-up some prime Sunni Real Estate. Their ulitmate goal is to remove the Saudi Royal Family from power and to capture Mecca.

Plenty of credible open source information out there on the IRGC which backs up what's going on in Iraq...

well i'm from lebanon i think that the Iranian army is becoming very dangerous day after day and it's providing terrorist into the area including my country and it has biological and atomic weapons so they won't be easy to defeat even if it's the US army look at what's happening with US troops in IRAQ well IRAN is even more powerfull and all it's population belongs to the same religion so it's pretty hard to defeat!

Well it can't withstand the American military, that's for sure, but it will make us bleed a lot more than Iraq did. A whole lot.
