It is a quick way to lose weight. If you go low carb (such as on the Atkins diet), weight loss is rapid. I heard it was bad for a person though, but I worked for a surgeon and he went on that diet, so I guess he thought it was OK. On the Atkins diet, you do start adding vegetables, etc., which have carbs, pretty quickly.

I don't think it's healthy long term, but I've done it before for about a month when trying to drop a few pounds. As long as I replaced the energy you're losing from not eating carbs with energy from other places, and made sure I was eating enough protein (meat, cheese, etc.), I didn't notice any adverse effects. Again, though, I wouldn't do it for a greatly extended period of time, because if it's a really long diet someone's looking for, you just can't beat the old cut back on food and exercise daily routine. :)

Exactly. Be extremely cautious of any diet that takes drastic measures of any sort. We call it a 'balanced diet' because that is the best diet to eat if you want to stay healthy. Diet alone isnt going to do it.....the old fashioned diet of cutting back calories, eating small frequent balanced meals, drinking the correct amount of water a day (64 ounces), and AVOIDING sugared drinks and fatty foods will be a great step toward controlling weight gain.
Now, in conjunction with this, getting up and moving, doing anything 'active' that requires walking, moving, or increasing heart rate will burn the calories. Should be doing some enjoyable activity that does not require sitting for long periods of time. This will increase overall health, decrease weight, strengthen muscles, make breathing easier, improve our mood, and maybe even our looks, ........all the things that make us enjoy life more.

Your body can get energy from fat, protein, and alcohol, just as it can get energy from carbohydrates. But the rest of you are right - there's no need to cut an entire class of macronutrients out of your diet.

Healthy foods from every food group and reasonably sized portions are the way to go - but we all know that. It's actually eating that way that's so hard!

No one should completely cut anything out of their diet, except maybe sugar and refined flour. But low carbers often find that after the initial 48 hours of the diet, they actually have more energy than when they started. Part of it is because of the ketones produced by an all protein diet. Part is because they are no longer on an insulin merry-go-round, up one minute down the next. But a truly healthy low carb diet will measure the ketones while adding a little carbs at a time till you stop producing ketones, and then cutting back to the next lowest level. This keeps you in ketosis while still keeping your blood insulin levels under control.

Because if you don't use the energy, it's turned into fat. Most of the people who do those diets aren't interested in using the energy, just losing the fat.

They use protein as their main source of energy instead because protein burns slowly over time keeping you full while carbs just burn quickly giving you a "jolt' of energy.

Because they only listen to the hype, not the science. There are also the people who claim they've cut out all carbs, then load up their plates with fruit and veges, which of course are loaded with carbs (the good kind!).
