Americans have jelly, jam and JELLO, but JELLO is the commercial name of the gelatin-based sweet dessert.

I make jelly and jam homemade all the time. Jelly is made from fruit juice only (as in grape jelly...which you eat on toast or with peanut butter but has NO fruit pieces in it), pectin, water and sugar and jam is jelly with fruit pieces in it, also used the same way as jelly. Both are a jarred product.

JELLO is a powdered boxed product, made from a pork byproduct, which is why those who do not eat pork do not eat JELLO or any gelatin based product. Kinda gross to take gelatin from a pig, add sugar, coloring and flavoring and serve it as dessert. Contrary to one responder, Americans generally do NOT heap JELLO on top of normal savory plates of food. Nasty.

We call it jelly. Had a great conversation with a 15 year old American and her younger siblings. I said the jello/jelly thing, and then I said, "Do you know what we call 'cookies'?" She didn't know, so I said, "Biscuits". She said, "So, what do you call biscuits, then?" and I replied "Scones".

We then went on about the crisps/chips/fries shenanigans, and aubergine/eggplant etc. They looked at me as if I were mad. It's my language, for crying out loud!!

How bizarre that we speak the same language but are so different!!

It's hard to believe but it is just what we would call jelly. The main reason it's hard to believe is that Americans eat it with the main meal (ie. with meat and veg.) The worst place to witness this is an american all you can eat buffet, it's disgusting to see a plate piled high with normal food with 'Jello' piled on top!!!

Do you know those Rowntree Fruit Flavoured Jelly packets above the ice cream in aisles of Asda and Tesco? It's a small cardboard box with cubes of brightly coloured gelatine that you put into boiling water, and when the water cools it forms jelly.
It's similar to that, except it makes all sorts of ready-made, easy-to-preserve gelatine desserts, like Angel Delight and things like that.
