Good question!!! maybe becase the colour yellow didn't exist back then but the colour lemon did?!

Oranges were originally called lemons but then people didn't like calling lemons yellows so they called them lemons instead.

I'd guess that the fruit was called orange first, and the color got that name by association.
Note that when you shop for clothing or cars, sometimes the color will be "lemon" or "plum" or "coffee" or "ruby". So in a sense, a lemon (color) is called a lemon (fruit). It's just that we have no original name for the fruit "orange".

Lemon is a colour anyway. So is Lime. Bit awkward with apples who come in all colours from green to red!
