Oranges were originally called lemons but then people didn't like calling lemons yellows so they called them lemons instead.

I'd guess that the fruit was called orange first, and the color got that name by association.
Note that when you shop for clothing or cars, sometimes the color will be "lemon" or "plum" or "coffee" or "ruby". So in a sense, a lemon (color) is called a lemon (fruit). It's just that we have no original name for the fruit "orange".
