It seems to me when these dogs are loose, they run around like crazy as if they never get walked, while the dogs that are well trained on voice command are leashed! Could it be people take the leash off because the dog keeps tugging on the leash and the owner got tired of being pulled? Is it because when the dog poos, the owner can pretend he didn't see it? There are plenty of areas designated for dog exercise and training, and if you walk your dog twice everyday, the dog doesn't have anything to gain by going off leash. I know there are simply inconsiderate people. But I just don't understand what is the attraction of taking the leash off?

sidearmer: horrors! you compared your dogs to cats?! Cats are waaay below dogs. But your answer is informative (although a bit rude, but hey, people are different). I was asking what people have to gain. I gather your dogs can't go to dog parks, and you don't have a house with a big yard so your dogs can't stretch their legs at home. I'm just trying to understand the problems.

A big problem is that when you disregard a certain rule, you can't stop others from doing the same.
I think people who let their dogs off leash don't realize that the reason they can do this, is because of the exact law they are breaking. Maybe sidearmers' dogs are trained, but errin b's dog is vicious and untrained (just an example). And we all know there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners out there. Other less vicious but unleashed dogs can also run up and keep pestering your dogs. Then every park is a dog park!
Sometimes when I can't find a parking space, I really want to double park. But if double parking was legal, I wouldn't be able to find a place to double park!

Just like Errin said, dogs have the right to run free just like humans do. That is why dogs are off the leash: SO THEY COULD RUN FREE!. The leash is not for RESTRAINING THEM , it is for their own protection: so they wont be hit by cars or get lost. And of course, agressive dogs have to be kept on leash so they wouldnt hurt other beings. But for the rest of them, it goes the way I explained above.

I think people are lazy, and don't want to bother to walk their dog every time it needs to go to the bathroom. Or they are just inconsiderate.
I work at a petstore, and a lot of people use those retractable leashes-which isn't bad if you are responsible. I see people let their dog run to the end of the leash, which can be a good 20 feet while they are still sitting in their car. So easy for a dog to dart out as a car is coming, and get hit while still on a leash. Or they walk around the store and the dog can still roam out of sight, and possibly come across a dog that doesn't like it.

Well I think it's because the owners don't realize that not everyone in this world are dog people. They assume since they love and adore their pups so much everyone else does too. I love my beagle, but I am not a HUGE fan of dogs. I dont like dogs jumping on me and getting all over me. I dont mind my beagle doing it because she is mine and i clean her often and ect.....but I NEVER let her jump on others or let her loose off a leash. I have one woman in my neighborhood who opens her door and lets her dog go out and run around for about 15 mins to use the bathroom. Teh dog tourments everyone!!! Runs up to other dogs on leashes and barks and provokes. She is the most annoying dog. SEVERAL people have confronted the owner and she gets very offended and says it's cruel that her pup is on leash jerking her by the neck and she refuses and doesnt care that it's against the law.
I know how you feel. I feel like I have too look outside before I take my dog out so her little dog will not bother my beagle.
Good Luck and thanks for being a responsible pet owner!

sidearmer and others that walk off leash. I think we should make everything in live convenient for you....why not. They SHOULD always walk on leash. If you don't like that rule DON'T OWN A DOG! They should be on leash to:
1) Control them - don't give me any poo about they are obedient and listen all the time...sorry it doesn't happen 100% of the time
2) To protect people and other animals. - some people don't want your dog near them or on their property...we need to respect other peoples wishes
3) Remember not ALL dogs are great with other dogs. You might have a run in w/ another dog because it passed into it's territory or something. I'm not saying an all out fight but dogs will be dogs and no matter if your dog or their dog is good w/ other dogs it only takes 1 instance for something to happen.
My question is why do they need to be off leash? They will get just as good of exercise. You can jog, walk, bike, swim, anything w/ your dog on leash. It is just considerate and more convenient for the owners.
To the person who asked if we would like to be leashed our whole lives...we are people and not dogs. Dogs are animals...big difference. In NO WAY is a leash inhumane or wrong as long as the owner isn't abusing the dog.
My suggestion is if you want your dog off leash fence in your yard!! I just did that 2 days ago. I want other dogs off of my yard and to keep my yard in. Great place to train w/ out a leash, play, run and go crazy. There you go problem solved.

I hope they never have their dogs hit by a car, attacked by another dog, or have anything else horrid happen to their dog for their idea of freedom. If its a "jerk their neck" thing- there are 2 GREAT products on the market. Gentle leader and the Halti. They fit like a halter on a horse and 95% of the dogs tolerate it after the first walk and DO NOT PULL!!!! All 3 of mine use it and they weigh between 70-90 lbs each. Walking is a joy. I walk a 3 together easily.

It's not that we are bad owners. I myself have a couple of dogs. They are off and on leash trained. Why should I have to keep my dogs on a leash? People own cats that just run all over the place piss and s**t everywhere. They crawl all over your cars and leave little scratch marks. Sure there are doggie parks where they can freely run off a leash, but why should I have to risk my pets health to go to one of these plays where they can catch something from another dog. I can just walk 2 blocks to a park by my house let them off the leash so they can run and stretch their legs. You people are all worthless cat lovers and have nothing better to do then to complain. Deal with it, it's not going away anytime soon.
My apologizes for being a bit rude. I wasn't comparing my dogs with cats but just dogs and cats in general and what some people do. My dogs can go to a doggie park. They are spayed and Vaccinated. I choose not to for there are people who do not take very good care of there animals. ( ticks, fleas, and other disease that have no vaccines as of yet) I have a decent size yard but my dogs love to play frizzbee and the yard is just not big enough for that, so we go to a regular park and we play. I understand that they can get excercise on a leash but who can keep up with german shepherds at full speed? No one! Just so everyones knows I also clean up after my dogs.

oh those people piss me off!!!
the other week i was watching this guy walking his rottie on a leash. Across the street was a young lady with some fluffy dog (much smaller then a rottie) - not on a leash! Fluffy dog was soo excited and ran over to the rottie. Guy started yelling, his dog was about to eat this fluffy one as dessert! and had he not restrained him super quickly it would have been his dogs fault for biting.
I don't care if your neighborhood has leash laws or not.. it is common sense! You might have the friendliest dog alive but you don't know the temperment of other people's pets.

I understand your frustration. Not only is it inconsiderate, but unsafe for the animal and the owner can be sited by the police. If the animal bites someone, even in play, you are setting yourself up for legal action. everyone should follow the law and protect the animal and themselves...

Would you like to be walked in a leash every single time you go outside for your entire life just because it happens that you were born in another specie than the top specie of the planet Earth?
Being human gives you the obligation to see things not just from your point of fiew, like animals do, but from other creatures point of view also. Because you can.
