Today my dog vomited - mainly bile with little dots of blood. He has been on 5mg of prednisone for the last 5 days for allergies. He is a 9 year old mini schnauzer. I am discontinuing the meds immediately, but has anyone else had this experience?

I live in Italy - there is no after hours vet. I can try tomorrow - if I thought he was going to die I would spend the $500 to call the vet 45 minutes from my house, but just concerned at this point.

Discontinuing pred suddenly is dangerous! I have no doubt that its tendency to irritate the stomach is the problem , but take it form me, you don't need the addison-like crash that can happen from a sudden dropping of the drug! Give him bland food (white rice is good) and about half the 5 mg ON A FULL STOMACH and contact your vet soon. Pepcid can help too and your vet can have good stomach coating soothing meds to help heal he stomach...

My cockapoo was on prednisone for a ruptured disk. This drug is hard on their stomachs, my dog ended up with blood in his biz. I was freaking out. Vet prescribe Amoxilin (pretty sure, can't find that inv at the moment). This coats their stomachs and that was the end of the problem and I continued with the meds. I was really upset with the vet for not warning us of this side effect, why wait for the dog to suffer before prescribing something for their stomachs as this I found out is a common side effect with prednisone.

Don't take a chance -- call the vet. It's best to be safe than sorry. I speak from experience: a friend did not take his sick dog to the vet (it was bleeding and vomiting), and the poor dog died the next morning. I don't want to scare you, but I think you should take action, NOW.

You need to talk to your vet right away. Vomiting blood is never a good sign and something that should never be left to see what happens. It maybe well be the medication, but you must be sure.

Good luck.

Your vet should have an after-hours emergency number. So call your vet and ask this question (no matter the time of day)...

IMHO, prednison is a poison that is overused by vets.
Causes more harm than good.
