Yes, but as a British citizen you can apply for an electronic visa (and ETA).
It should only cost about £10-15, and you can get this from your local travel agent.
They last for up to 3 months.

Yes they do, if you book you trip to Australia via a high street travel agents they automatically put your visa on your passport for you, its done electronically via computer, otherwise I think you have to download one from a computer.
