VISTA is a new OS. It is buggy as heII and will remain that way for a while. Give the users and engineers a year to sort out and patch the bigger problems then buy. Getting VISTA right now would be like buying the first model year of a car. Without a history of reliability and performance you just don't know what you are getting. In July of '08 reevaluate the issue and decide then whether or not you want to purchase the software. By then VISTA should have a track record, either good or bad but at least you will have some idea of what you are getting into.

Vista on a NEW machine is probably OK, but make sure there are Vista drivers for your Printer, Scanner, Camera, etc. FIRST. These are what cause most migration problems. Not all XP applications work in Vista, either.

Upgrading to Vista on an older PC is not a good idea YET, use the free Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (See Below:) to test your PC's compatibility.

Then, wait until all the manufacturer's have Vista drivers in place. Until then, stick with XP.

All depends on what you want to do with your pc and how powerful it is.

If you are a gamer , then stick with XP and save for a top of the line pc so you can run DX10 games when they come out - these will only work with Vista as no DX10 support is being done for XP.

If you want to run Office apps , surf the net , do graphics work , some desktop publishing then why not change to Linux instead?

I run Vista Ultimate on one of my pcs - this is used strictly for programming using XNA Game Studio for XBox360 programming and nothing else. There is no option other than Windows for this use.

However , all my other pcs ( 3 at present ) all run some form of Linux. Why? Simply because it is free , and does not crash and spit the dummy all the time like Vista does if you try and run software that used to work on XP but has real problems on Vista.
All the Microsoft lovers out there might say , well that is the actual software's fault not Microsoft and this is true to some extent. However , if I have a program under Linux that won't work on the version I have , then all I have to do is download the source code and recompile for my own kernel and it works. I can't do that with Windows software so I am stuck.

So for general every day things like surfing the net , email , graphics , music creation , dvd burning etc I use my Linux systems because they work.

Vista is fine if you restrict it to doing only what is currently compatible with it. Although I am a huge fan of Open Source like Linux , I do have legal copies of both Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 and will soon be buying Visual Studio too.
Linux does have some ground to catch up for a nice IDE like Visual Studio but it does everything else with ease.

So , as a final note , you can try Linux instead of XP , or keep XP , but I really can't recommend Vista as a general O/S suitable for everyday use.

If you go to Vista then you must have a lot of computer to be able to use it properly. Most home computers even the new ones are not enough. Even the Vista ready computers are in adequate for proper use of the program.

XP is better if you do not have enough computer to handle the Vista.

Kevin my friend it is your choice and only yours mate. I am using win2000,XP,VISTA. I have three operating system on my computer further more I have another computer system with win 95,98,2000,xp,vista operating system.

Some of you might be asking why am I using all this? Reason I am software engineer and I have to test my software if it is backward compatible or not. There are still many people in the world who are still using win 95 and 98.

Again your choice mate

Your choice. If you like throwing your money away to billionaires, and you need something to burn your time with useless stuff, such as what is compatable with Vista, then go ahead.
However, if you can think of better uses for $200 (or more) rather than donate it to Bill and Melinda Gates trust fund, or if you can think of something productive or fun you would like to do with your time, then I would recommend www.kubuntu.org as it is a free operating system that is free of many of Microsoft security, and driver problems.
