Can any of you good people recommend a video camera that costs less than £200, can create .mpg or .avi files and is easy to use?

Canon MD101

About £150.

It doesn't create mpeg or avi files, it uses MiniDV tapes but your computer will be doing the conversion to MPEG or AVI.

It records in true widescreen or the regular, normal format.

I recommend the BP-2L14 long life battery if you decide to take this up seriously. I've bought two and they are fantastic. Almost 4 hours working time each.

You'll also need a firewire connection to your computer or IEEE1394 connection on your DVD-Recorder - sometimes called an iLink connection.

And you'll need editing software. Some magazines do free editing software for most jobs but I find Womble MPEG Video Wizard very easy to use. Nice transitions.

And TMPGEnc DVD Author to make a DVD as the menu system is much easier to use than Nero's NeroVision Express.
