Make sure you follow up on it. Given the description it sounds like an aggravated battery and the suspect should have been arrested. But of course I cannot speak for those officers that responded.
Be sure to have your friend take photos of the injuries, keep the bills, make a list of witnesses, and get a copy of the police report. If the suspect was not arrested then get the names of the officers who responded. You can usually get that through the records department or communications.
Your friend may also want to consider a civil suit against the suspect.

When your co worker was taken to the hospital, was he wearing the right kind of shoes? Was he dressed "cool" enough? Did he have two or more "hot" babes with him?
I hope so. If not, we may not have let him in.

Were the police made aware of what happened? Your friend may have to file charges with the police to get anything done.

Who started it and was it self defense?
Although, I truly doubt that is the case!
The police would surely have detained him if they felt he attacked without provocation, but they may have his information and want to talk to the victim first.
They have to protect themselves from frivolous lawsuit and shouldn't be quick to arrest anyone!
These two may just be buddies too and in that case, the victim may not even press charges.
Watch "cops" sometime, it really happens!

If they took his info he may be charged at a later date. Your co worker may need to press charges or the club owner.

It depends, if the co worker was intentionally hit he could get charged with assault and battery. If it was an indirect hit, assault. If he was drunk he could get hit up with drunk and disorderly conduct along with other charges. He will defiantly be an unhappy camper when he goes to court.

He should be arrested and charged with assault and battery. The co-worker should sue him for his injuries.

If no one presses aggravated assault charges against him, then most likely nothing.
