I am from the Philippines and is married to a US soldier. We got married here in the Philippines just a little over 1 month ago and he is now in Germany to his new PCS, and he's trying to get me and our son there. He told me that all I would need is passport, copy of his orders (that he would just fax to me) and plain ticket. He said no need for a Visa. My question is, does anyone know if it would matter if we we're married before he got his orders or not? His previous assignment was in Korea which I believe he got his orders to Germany from there, and he came here and we got married. Orders and passport and plain tickets just sounds too easy for me...

Any info please...?!

I know about command sponsorship and all.. which my husband said that we can process when I'm already there, and that for now it's just his orders that I would need.. is this possible? What I want is if anyone knows how to do it Philippines to Germany specifically?

No, thats it. Visa you would need if you weren't married to him and you wanted to study or work abroad.

Okay, your situation is going to be much more complicated. you absolutely NEED to have your IDs. since his orders to Germany were issued BEFORE you got married, he needs to get them amended. This may or may not be easy to do.

Because you are not a US Citizen, there are more hurdles to jump through. in this scenario, you do need a Visa, because you are not eligible for a No Fee Passport. You also must have your Philippine Islands Passport.

This is going to take a very long time, and frankly, may not happen at all. If you choose to move over there on your own, you would NOT be protected under the SOFA, and thus subject to Germany's rules regarding immigrants from the PI.

Whether or not there is anyplace left in the PI that you can get your ID at I do not know, but he can fill out paperwork that allows you to do so, and you MUST have them before you can complete any of the Overseas Screening requirements to get Command Sponsorship.

Ok, my husband got posted to Germany almost 2 years ago now and I was told the same thing.....get your passport, bring the orders and come on down. This was NOT the case. There is a process that he has to go through called command sponsorship. It is basically the chain of command saying that he has permission to bring you here. He may have to sign on to an additional couple of months so that his tour is 3 years in order to bring you along. That's what happened with my husband so now his contract is 2 months longer than when he landed here. It took about 2 months for all the paperwork to come through but then the Army pays for you to fly out here and it turns out that I did not need a passport. I took my military ID (for me and for my kids) and a copy of the orders. When I got to the passport check point I showed them the ID and the command sponsorship orders and they told me to have a nice day, that was it. The hardest part is just waiting for the sponsorship to come through and then you'll be good to go. Good luck to you! You'll love it here, it is just beautiful!!

Do you have your US passport yet? You might want to see the embassy about getting one before you go anywhere...and ask them for further advice.

Generally though, once you are married to a US citizen, you won't need the Visa, and it wouldn't matter when you got married in relation to when he received his orders.

Something you need to talk to him about though: base housing. Sometimes there is a waiting period of 6-12 months. See if he has applied for base housing yet.

Good luck.

EDIT:

Again, no, you don't need the visa.

Also, your husband is right about the military ID's. You will receive those in Germany. They are not necessary to travel.

HOWEVER, I do believe your husband needs to apply for command sponsorship FIRST. That's the only way he can apply for base housing. If you travel there, and he hasn't gotten command sponsorship, you won't be eligible for base housing, which I mentioned, takes up to a year sometimes. Sometimes quicker, depending on the specific base. It is possible to receive a housing allowance to rent in the community, but again, his command needs to know he his married, and for that he needs command sponsorship.

Of course, you are the wife, and he is the husband, and he should know what needs done, but ask him if he can get command sponsorship first. All that is required (if my memory serves me) is the marriage certificate and a special request chit.

He will need to get an ammendment to his orders stating he is allowed to bring a family. It will mean his European tour will be extended from 2 years to 3 years. His admin section at the new unit can fix this and generate the ammendment.

Once the ammendment is done, yes, that is all you need, orders with the ammendment, your passport, and the ticket, and you should be re-imbursed for the ticket.

Ok first of all he needs to go talk to his SGT. He will get him where he needs to go. He will have to drop a sponser packet (not sure what its called). This process can take about 6 weeks. You will be sent paper work to fill out. You will also have to get a physical at a military facility. You should be able to get your passport for free at the military facility where you get your physical. This all has to be done before the army will "pay your way" to Germany.
