I'm not talking about family and close friends, I mean co-workers and acquaintances. Do you think people mean it or is it just a figure of speech?

I think most people say that phrase anymore as one would say "God Bless You" after a sneeze. It's really lost it's meaning and most times is just something people say to be nice and sympathetic after something unfortunate or tragic happens in someone else's life.

To be honest, the phrase, "You're in my prayers" holds no weight with me whatsoever when coming from people i don't really know as i know most times the expression is overused and has become commonplace. So i don't even give it a second thought. I'm sure they mean that well and with noble intentions in terms of bringing comfort, and for that i am thankful. But i do not believe they are all actually remembering me in their prayers. But coming from those that i do know that pray, it means a lot. I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing as too many prayers being offered up to heaven on behalf of someone else.
Also, i've said that phrase at times, but i assuredly mean it. If i say i'm praying for you......... i am.

For the most part just a figure of speech. Still, there are a number of people who do mean it. I really like it when someone takes the time right that minute to pray with me about the situation.

Yes.. Many people say a general prayer for all of humanity which would include individuals. Part of faith is empathy and wanting to give back even if the giving back is to say a prayer for others. Praying is powerful.

It totally depends on who says it to you. Some people really mean it. Some people just seem to say it. But why worry about whether or not you are? Isn't it nice to think they are thinking of you, at least for that moment?

It's a figure of speech. Besides,if the person is a nonbeliever it may not help much. ;)

When I hear that, I tense up inside. It feels more like abuse than real concern.

The God of the Bible doesn't care, anyhow. He is busy with other things...

I think most folks mean it. If they don't, does it matter? I mean if they say it, then you're probably aready praying for yourself. Isn't that good enough?
