You are badly mistaken. Your question should be, "Why do nations/societies/cultures/communities begin brainwashing children at a very early age?"

it really is very very simple, because to days youth have so many external influences as they grow up, all major religions have realised that as each generation grows up there are going to be more and more open minded people about who will realise that they can make their own decisions about religion, so the children get forced into believing in their parents or community beliefs before they can make this decision. I've seen this happen to a few people and i think it is sickening and wrong, when i was in school we had to sing gyms and go to church at Easter and stuff like that, i hated every second of it, and i hated the fact that i was baptised the moment i was able to make an informed decision, as soon as i could make an informed decision i ditched god, skipped being an atheist, went to Wicca, and am now a satanist and I'm much much better off, if i ever have kids I'm going to give them the very basics of all religions and let them explore for them selves

It is not just religion that people are brain-washed by. Almost everything that goes on is some kind of brain washing - people call it their belief's. It is confined to children either, in fact children are more pure than adults are and will only take in what they think is right or temporarily follow suit.

Brain washing is never a good thing. But what about training?
Children are born knowing nothing - such ignorance is never bliss.
They should know that spitefulness, lying, stealing and violent behaviour always ends in tears. They should know that their behaviour influences how they enjoy or do not enjoy their lives. If it means threatening them with hell because they are not old enough to think rationally then maybe that is preferable to the danger of producing hell on earth for themselves and everybody else.

The old USSR outlawed the teaching of religion to children - it was one of the few positive things about the Soviet system. I think their concern was more about eradicating religion after several generations, rather than sparing the children the grief that comes with religious indoctrination, but it accomplished both. My friends (who are all irreligious) include people of many reliigous backgrounds, and the guilt they struggle with haunts them throughout their lives. Former Jews and Catholics seem to suffer most, although the problem seems to affect everyone who tries to escape their early brain-washing experiences. Religion is a vice, and should be reserved for adults.

Because that is the way that religions are kept alive.
Why do you think that the Pope forbids catholics from using contraceptives? It because he wants good catholics to produce many more future catholics.
Reading some of the comments from deluded christians on this site it can be clearly seen that brain-washing works!

They are not actually being cruel though. They brainwash them becasue small children won't question them.
Its wrong to ask this question, parents still have the right to bring up children with their own culture/beliefs.
Atheist.

Because the infant to early age is like an empty carthridge what you taught at as early age he wil absorbed and digest to his blanked mind and hearth. As he goes on his ages grow older his learned lesson from what you taught he had to follow. When you teach an old man who is hard-headed you can hardly not convinved him what you should teach!
Definetely, it's not that how it's not cruelty to the child as you think?

religion is a socially created tool, and children should at least be familiar with their family's religious structure as a means of socializing them. Even athiests parents have an obligation to teach their kids about the world around them and answer their questions about what life is about.
It's only abuse when it causes mental or physical harm or incites hatred.

I do not agree that it is "brainwashing" for parents to teach their children their beliefs. All parents do this, religious or not. Whatever your parents deeply held beliefs were, they passed them on to you. When you came of age, you either accepted or rejected those beliefs. Those beliefs, however were part of who your parents were and had they held back from teaching them to you, you would not know who your parents were and would be poorer for it.
In fact, it would be cruel for parents NOT to teach and train their children. Not only would the parents be strangers to their children, but the children would be at a disadvantage intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
