...and saw - to my utter horror - that it's almost completely covered with tarnish!! Never in my life have I been so embarrassed! Can someone please tell me how to safely remove the tarnish, without damaging the surface???

My grateful thanks :)

Soak it in vinegar and then brush it gently with a toothbrush dipped in baking soda. Wipe it with a lint free cloth.
You should keep it in a velvet lined case to keep it clean.

Sincere Prayer, Repentance and penance. Works every time.
One can avoid the tarnish but only a committed soul can do this. if tarnish cannot be avoided one can still find peace through prayer and faith. That's what i believe ;p

The keepsake box may have some tarnish, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Well, at least it didn't try to escape from a jar like mine did...I had to use the Net...

How about using a water/vinegar mix, it works great and leaves a shine!

Don't neglect it for so long! I think it would be okay if you left it out for a while and soak it in the sun. Love your penquin and witty sense of humor!
