Is he active or inactive? Also, is he financially challenged or comfortable? Those are the questions. If he likes to go to restaurants, give him a gift card to his favorite. Even better take him out yourself and spend time together. Buy him a book if he reads or a gift card to a bookstore. Maybe go shopping together. Have his photograph taken at a studio and get copies for the family as a remembrance. Maybe he would like to send them out and you can help him with stamps and addresses. Time spent together is sometimes better than the gift itself.

Does he like history? The John Adams book that the new HBO series is based on is the absolute rage among the 60-70 year old people that I know. They are all talking about it and in fact, my father in law had two copies so he gave one to my husband last night. It's a really nice looking book too. PS, Sorry I just noticed the UK thing. I guess he'd have to be interested in colonial history for that one. Fighting the British might not be his cuppa.

If he enjoyed books before he lost his vision, how about taped books he can listen to. I have a dad, not quite that old, but I always have a problem with getting him something, also, so I know what you're talking about. How about something sentimental, like taking pictures he has when he was younger, put them in a nice book and title it something like Grandpa, this is your life. Older people like to remember their life and the good times. Maybe if don't have the money spend the day with him and bring out old pictures of his life and get him to talk about them. This way he gets to remember and you get a history lesson. Mainly just spend time with him. That's something he'll never forget!!

Something from his childhood would be nice. Or a pocket watch with his birthday engraved on it. Cook his favorite dish for him.

Nothing. Just be with him the WHOLE day on his birthday. If you want, you can play chess with him. Anything ... that will make him feel important and loved.
