"What a weirdo priest THIS guy is. First he writes a sermon for a bunch of deaf people, then he turns off the lights in his room and darns socks."

"No man is an island"
This is true
"To posess a ring of power is to be alone"
Said to Frodo in Lord of the Rings - yet Sam,
his best friend, never left his side.
I think we are all lonely at some point in our lives,
yet it can make us stronger and more sure of
oursleves if we become closer to the Lord.
The prophets in the Bible were often very lonely.
Jesus was lonely on earth as well.
Loneliness is not always our fault.
We could simply be seeking what is
better and waiting for the right
opportunity.
Waiting is sometimes difficult,
we learn faith, hope, and love
in a more profound way, though.

One possible interpretation:
Who are the lonely people:
I think all the lonely people are the people not going to church...
(or all the people who do nothing about not being lonely)
Where do they all belong:
Lonely people should go to church.
(or to be a part of a group of some sort)
Is that what the songs means, perhaps?
Father McKenzie does his work, but nobody comes.
Eleanor Rigby sits at home dreaming, doesn't go to church, she dies and nobody comes to her funeral.
There's places to go, things to do, lonely people should become a part and not apart from the world's offer of community.

Sounds like someone has had a Beetles' song going through his mind today. : )
There do seem to be a lot of lonely people in this world, though. Some are lonely even when not alone.

I hail from Lawrence Kansas. I belong in bed right now. Oh, wait, I am in bed. It's hard to pry myself away from the computer, so I took it to bed with me.

lonely people come from situations that caused them to develop mental complexes. this causes a feeling of isolation, even when others are present.
they either belong in therapy or a nightclub.
