I was always intrigued by the old grimoires.

In studying the old grimoires in my University days, I was struck by the almost scientific complexity of ritual. Anyone who has perused the Key of Solomon and its companion book, the Goetia, knows that there are so many particulars to any ritual that it rightly earns its name of being an "operation" to carry out. Everyone also knows that the main function of the grimoires is to contact spirits and/or demons, to seek their aid.

S.L.M. Mathers, with help from other members of the Order of The Golden Dawn, greatly simplified the rituals by interpreting them in the modern sense, and replacing the physical requirements by and large with symbolic ones. For instance, the modern rituals do not require actually drawing out the circle with the various names of God, but rather they can be intoned in the various quadrants and given symbolic place.

Whether simplified or traditional, do you think the grimoires work? I never had any success.

It depends on what you mean by "works".

Do I believe in demons and spirits, let alone ones that can be summoned and controlled? No. But that doesn't mean I throw it all out the window. I do think there's a "power" in esotericism and organized ceremony, even if it might be purely psychological. For example, I find the Enochian language and the Enochian keys to be VERY emotionally moving. But some of those old rituals needlessly make it too much of a scavenger hunt ("gather this herb in the full moon and tie a horse's hair in 9 knots..."). There needs to be some level of practicality.

I ritualize with the intent of "emotionalizing" and indulging in the esotericism of it all, so for me, a ritual that incorporates selected pieces of grimoires "works" for me. I hate to sound like some self-help seminar guru, but I think you need to define "success" beforehand.

Alot of it has to do with intent and how the ritual feels to you. If it feels wrong or fake it will not work if it feels right and natural you are getting closer. Most witches or spell casters I know use personal spells that they have written or developed. Many grimoires were intended as private documentation. Also those that were intended for a wider audience are usually based on an assumption that you have some training or proficiency in the Craft

In a short answer, working with Magic and the rituals does work. However, most of the ritual and symbolism expressed in many of the books are incomplete in one way or another.

Many of the rituals you describe are very exacting ... certain days, certain colors, facing certain ways, with certain clothes, etc... Each one of these things is a harmonic amplifier for energy that is needed to accomplish the end task. But generally, in the instructions, they don't tell you where the energy is supposed to come from. They hint at it, but never really zero in on the prime source.

The Grimoires are basically recipe books of rituals that have succeeded for at least one person writing the book. But as we are all individuals with different base 'vibrational frequencies' what works for one may not necessarily work for another.

I think that contacting demons and spirits these days takes nothing more than intent to watch TV. Man, I hate the boob tube these days. Nothing good is on. Just a time waster...and...well, look at me, just look at me. I've gotten ticked off for no reason whatsoever. Sheesh. I'm a self-fulfilling prophecy. As for grimoires, I've never seen one, and have hardly known of their existence, but it figures, doesn't it?

Absolutley and this is an abomination unto the Lord.
I used to be into that stuff until I had a total turn around.
Don't take my word for it!
Deuteronomy 18:9-14
9 "When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, don't follow the disgusting practices of the nations that are there.
10 Don't sacrifice your children in the fires on your altars; and don't let your people practice divination or look for omens or use spells
11 or charms, and don't let them consult the spirits of the dead.
12 The Lord your God hates people who do these disgusting things, and that is why he is driving those nations out of the land as you advance.
13 Be completely faithful to the Lord."
14 Then Moses said, "In the land you are about to occupy, people follow the advice of those who practice divination and look for omens, but the Lord your God does not allow you to do this.

If you were "blocked" then I don't think you'd be able to see the question listed in the first place. Maybe he's editing it right now.

We liked Mister Crowley's work quite a bit. I have the entire collection original pressings some of them signed and worked on by Mr Crowley himself. I was particularly interested in his work on the Enochian magiks. Not to mention the wonderful reference book of ,"777 and other Qabalistic Formulas."

*Edit*
As to whether or not they actually work. It is the first belief structure that I know that applies scientific process to the spiritual world. I think I have seen evidence of its use and applications but... things of this nature are never exactly...conclusive.

If they are done perfectly it will happen. I've tried the LBRP and vibrating the names has always giving me trouble. Here is my take on all of it. (from my dad) you try the simple way and if it doesn't work try the more complicated way. BTW are you doing a cleansing on yourself and everyone else that is involved?
