I'm going to the States soon (by land), I don't have a passport so I am going to enter by using my birth certificate. I know you need to show a photo ID, however, my driver's license expires the day of my trip. Would it matter that my driver's license is expired or not?
I want to contact the U.S customs but I can't seem to find the number.

Your photo ID and a secondary ID that proves your citizenship. (birth Certificate, Social Security card or passport) is what you need to reenter the US. Your slightly expired ID should prove no problem.

From the Source,
The answer to the question, "Do I Need a Passport to Visit Canada or Mexico?" depends on how you are planning to cross the border and when.
US Citizens Visiting Canada or Mexico by Land or Water
The other date, which is when the WHTI will require citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian or Mexican border by land or water, is yet to be determined. The deadline for the changes to take place, however, is June 1st, 2009. The deadline was previously January 1, 2008.
Necessary ID to Enter Canada or Mexico by Land or Water before the WHTI Dates:
Until the WHTI land and water dates go into effect, American citizens crossing the border into Canada or Mexico by land or water need ID that proves two things: 1) Citizenship, and 2) Identity by way of a photo.
A driver's license on its own or a Social Security Card on its own are not valid ID to cross the Canadian or Mexican border.
I hope that answers your question. it is from this web site.

It all depends on the timing of your trip and the guard on duty.

Since you're traveling by land before 31 December 2007, you need to provide proof of citizenship (which can be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND a valid photo ID (which can be passport, US or Canadian driver's license, or military ID).

You ARE driving into the US, I assume ... if your license expires the day of the trip, the chances are reasonably high that the border will turn you away if you're behind the wheel. If you're simply a passenger ... well, they have the right to refuse you entry.

Your best bet is to stop into a driver's exam center and renew your license before you go. Most offices will do so on the spot, or at least give you documentation that indicates the new license is "in the mail".
