The American lower middle class are now the most frequent users of modern cruise ships.
They virtually invented what has now become a recreational activity for increasing numbers of other european nations.
This grew out of the expanding economic wealth in the USA during the fifties and sixties and was then followed by europeans as their economies flourished also.

The US is the largest consumer of cruises by far. Even European Cruises are heavily marketed in the US. CLIA and international organization of cruise travel sales consultants and agents does their demographic and marketing studies in the US, which shows they note the source of the greatest market. However, some cruise lines do not sail out of US ports and their demographics would be different if you looked exclusively at that information.

As far as the US, it is no the US lower middle clss that is the primary source of cruise revenue. Over 50% the largest part of the cruise market has an average income of $90,000, USD per year witha range of $75,000-$200,000 in the main group of cruisers. Other passengers are spread evenly above and below that range. Studies are not made of consumers making under $40,000 USD per year as they are not considered to be a viable marketing area.

The lower middle class in the US is considered to be those making over the current poverty level and under the $60,000 per year seen as the bottom of the current upper middle class range.

Additionally most cruisers are over 25 with the highst number coming from the 30-59 y/o age groups, taking away the common misconceptio that cruisers are retired.

Finally one of every 4 trips over 3 days in the US are cruises according to recent marketing surveys
