Jesus Christ said this:
"And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;"
Mark 16:17
All the apostles and Mary, mother of Jesus experienced this:
"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
Acts 2:1-4
Paul wrote this:
"For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.............He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified............... For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you."
I Corinthians 14:2,4-5,13-18
Earlier he wrote to the Corinthians: "Now concerning spiritual (things) I would not have you be ignorant......"
How sad that most of the Church is just exactly that - ignorant.

I am not Pentecostal (I'm Roman Catholic) I learned that speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit; some people have this gift and some do not. Go ahead and tell your friend you are interested in discussing religion. Particularly being a minister's wife she might have some interesting insights to share with you.

don't be scared she is probably dying to tell another person about the gift of the holy ghost as much as you are dying to know about it, and since she is a ministers wife she is probably very good at explaining it. yes pentecostal believe that when you recieve the gift of the holy ghost you will speak in tongues. it comes from the book of acts in the bible on the day of pentecost in the upper room when the holyghost came they all spoke in other tongues.

Not just Pentecostal people. The bible, both the old testament as well as the new, clearly states that speaking in angelic tongues is a gift of God. Jesus said the signs of those who believe will be speaking in tongues and casting out demons.
Speaking in tongues is a heavenly language that God gives as a gift. It is the Holy Spirit who is speaking through us, communicating deep spiritual things from us to God. There is great power in this prayer.
But like all things, it can be faked, abused, or misunderstood. Just be sure we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Or slap God in the face by denying or disbelieving his wonderful gift to us.
