Rev 13:17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.
Rev 13:18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.
Before the invention of figures by the Arabs, in the tenth century, letters of the alphabet were used for numbers. The Greeks in the time of Homer, or soon after, are thought by some to have assigned to their letters a numerical value corresponding to their order in the alphabet. If you are familiar with the Greek of the New Testament, an argument can be made that the 666 is an allusion to Emperor Nero. Just as easily an argument can be made that the 666 refers to a "Latin Power" or, the Roman Catholic Church, Julius Caeser Atheus, Luther, and others.
As you can see from the above, there is no consensus on the interpretation. The antichrist is figurative, not a literal person, but a body of belief that denies Jesus is the Christ, the second person of the Triune God.
1Jn 2:22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
1Jn 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

The Antichrist comes after a falling away or apostasy. (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
- At times forbids marriage (1 Timothy 4:3)
- At times commands not to eat certain foods that God says are ok to eat. (1 Timothy 4:3-5)
- Has other teachings that are devilish (1 Timothy 4:1; Acts 8:20; 1 John 3:8, 4)
• The Antichrist is revealed before the second coming of Jesus. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3)
• The Antichrist has a visible leader. (Acts 20:30; 2 Thessalonians 2:4; Daniel 7:8)
• The Antichrist comes from within the church. (Acts 20:30; 2 Thessalonians 2:4)
• and then takes up residence in the church (2 Thessalonians 2:4)
• The Antichrist rules for a long period of time. (Revelation 13:5, 12:6, 12:14; Daniel 7:25)
• The Antichrist receives its power from the Devil. (Revelation 13:2; Revelation 12:9)
• The Antichrist blasphemes God. (Revelation 13:5-6; Daniel 7:8,20,25)
• The Antichrist tries to change God's law. (Daniel 7:25)
• The Antichrist persecutes the people who keep God's law. (Revelation 13:2, 12:17, 14:12; Daniel 7:21)
• The persecution diminishes prior to the end of the Antichrist's rule. (Matthew 24:22)
• The Antichrist's long rule comes to an end. (Revelation 13:3)
• The Antichrist again regains power and prestige. (Revelation 13:3)
• The Antichrist deceives people around the world into worshipping it. (Revelation 13:3)
• Another forces people to worship the Antichrist. (Revelation 13:11-12)
• Miracles are used to deceive people into worshipping the Antichrist. (Revelation 13:13-14)
• Some resist the authority of the Antichrist so economic sanctions are then used. (Revelation 13:16)
• Some people still resist and a death decree is brought against them. (Revelation 13:15)
• The Antichrist has a mark of authority that must be avoided at all costs. (Revelation 13:16-17, 14:9-10)

I know that the Bible doesn't say the "antichrist" is a specific person. In fact, the word is not used once in the Revelation of John.
It is used toward the end of the New Testament, to refer to a person who is unlike Christ. But the idea of a single Antichrist opposing God is a modern one. It makes me laugh how people will just go along, though. Everyone assumes that idea is in the Bible.
Here's another one: find the story of Lucifer's fall in the Bible (in the past, not as a prophecy of future events in Revelation). If you can find it, I'll send you $1000 Paypal, because it ain't there.

Yup. It will be male, he will come out of Rome(roots). He will be introduced to the world through a false prophet.
Seeing the way the 10 nation unit has formed, I'd have to say he will start simply by leading the UN.
He will appear wonderful and the answer to the whole world's problems. He will sign a peace treaty with Israel.
After 3 1/2 years, he will begin to show his true colors.
He will cause the whole world to take on his mark(most likely a chip under the skin) that will be the only means of buying or selling (your bank), replacing all plastic money. Those who will not take the mark will not be able to buy food and eventually, those will be hunted down and slaughtered.
He will build an icon of himself, set up in the Jewish temple to be worshiped. He will eventually, by the end of 7 years after the treaty is signed, gather the armies of the countries around Israel to come against Israel, with every intent of wiping out the Jews.

The prophecy of the tribulation, the period of the antichrist's rule is a warning. It's not inevitable in my view. We can avert this from happening by standing up against evil and furthering God's work here on Earth.

Anyone who is against Jesus is an "antichrist" but THE ANTICHRIST is the false Messiah who becomes the leader of a One World Government. He is also called "A man of Sin" and "The Beast" and somehow his name will add up to 666.
Before the 'man of sin' is revealed there will be a series of attacks on Israel, leading up to a major attack that brings about the START of End Times scenario.
This major attack is NOT Armageddon, Armageddon comes much later. What we are talking about here is a sneak attack which probably includes nukes and is the battle prophesied in Ezekiel 38-39. This attack on Israel that Ezekiel prophesied is the start of of the Great Tribulation.
If it happens in the near future there here's a possible scenario:
The US and/or Israel go after Iran's nukes, but are less than 100% successful in de-stabilizing Iran. Through Syria, Iran has Hezbollah launch nukes against Israel causing much damage in northern and central regions. Israel nukes and levels Damascus in return. (The Bible talks about Damascus being a smoking wasteland)
The fanatics in Iran retaliate against Israel's main supporter - the US with massive terrorist attacks in America and Iraq which causes financial upheaval in the oil markets. The combination sidelines the US.
This war against Israel causes so much death and destruction that everybody goes to the negotiating table. The resulting treaty convinces Israel that they have no one to fear and they lower their defences. But with Russia's help Iran quickly rebuilds their weapons and on a day when Israel least expects it Iran and it's Moslem coalition attacks again thus fulfilling Ezekiel's prophecy.
Next the anti-christ appears as a great peacemaker (Dan 8:25) probably on the heels of Ezekiel's battle. The peace treaty he enforces begins Daniel's 70th week and permits the Jews to build their Temple, leading them to believe that he's on their side. After 3 1/2 years he's consolidated his power enough to stand in the Holy Place and declare that he's God (see 2 Thes. 2:4). It's this declaration that kicks off the great tribulation,(Matt 24:15-21) and alerts believing Jews to the fact that he's not the Messiah like they thought but he's an imposter. The Great Tribulation and all the tribulation events follow on from there.
So the key signs to watch for are
* a vicious attack on Israel with great loss of life on both sides
* a world leader emerging and making a peace deal
* The rebuilding of the Temple on Temple Mount and resumption of Temple Sacrifices
* This world leader claiming to be God and being able to demonstrate supernatural powers.
There will also be a "False Prophet" who supports him and confirms that this man is the Messiah - possibly this will be the Pope of the day.

Its not a man its a spirit and there are many men that have it:
1Jo 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1Jo 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1Jo 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2Jo 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
