I have a 3 1/2 month old yorkie who has been acting strange lately. She currently is getting over kennel cough...on clavamox for another few days. She sits up on her butt with paws in the air and sways side to side crying and kind of growls, and tries to bite her butt. She will roll on her back and curl up and lick at her butt. Then she runs around and does it all over again. This may go on for 30 minutes or so. It may happen once or even twice a day, sometimes not as severe as others. She has been dewormed, and her feces has been tested twice. She does not have lice. I told her vet about this when I first noticed her doing some of the stuff and at this time it wasn't as severe...and she said that 'it just might be something she does.' If you could see her doing this you would know that something is wrong. Other than that weird series of events she eats normally (more like hogs it down), drinks water, and plays like a normal puppy. Please help, we have been up all night!

if her anal glands are fine, does she have fleas? or maybe an allergy and her butt itches? sometimes it can be an allergy and they itch. if that's not it, i would press your vet for more answers. and let the vet know it's getting worse. also if the vet can't find a medical reason for it, you might need to look at it being behavioral. do you give her attention or react to her doing this every time? my friend's dog had anal gland problems and got a reaction everytime she scooted. so for a long time after the anal gland problem was resolved she still did it, because she'd learned it was a way to get attention. i would first make sure it's not a medical problem. and if you're sure it's not, ignore her when she does it. get up and just walk away and make no eye contact or say anything when she's doing it and see if she stops after awhile. but definatly make sure it's not something she needs help with.

Maybe her anal glands need expressing, but I would think the vet would have noticed that.Fleas? Some type of seizure or an inflammation in a nerve near the base of her tail? Have you checked for hot spots near her tail? I have seen dogs who will literally attack their own tails,as if they were not a part of their body.I can't remember what it is called, but it's a neuropsychological disorder.I would ask the vet about it again. Good luck to you and your puppy.

Hi Kc, She need her 2 glands that are at the opening of her
anal to be relief the glands put one thumb on one side and one thumb on the others side and sort of push in and a terrible smelling crap will come out of her sacks. If you are afraid to try this Please take her to another vet. Your vet should of check this out. If those 2 glands burst it can kill your pup. I know this is true because the vet did that to my dog. Get help A.S.A.P.
A Friend.

Has she been tested for worms? Also, have her checked for impacted anal glands (not sure how common that is in puppies, but never hurts to check!)
If nothing else, get a 2nd opinion from another vet.

is it the antibiotics giving her a tummy ache as they can do this if it only started doing this since being on antibiotics i would think there was a link, has she had her tail docked?dont know if they still do this, but if so could have some nerve damage, also when she starts to do this pick her up and distract her with something else

I think you should definately take her to a different vet. Your's has obviously missed something. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

I would try calming her down by using something that's been made for animals like Sedapet, its all natural. Maybe snapping her out of that behaviour by using a distraction, like a squeaky toy or chewy treat

If you don't like what the vet is telling you, you don't think he is taking you seriously, then get a new vet.

I am wondering if she has a back injury and is trying to find the pain by licking and contorting herself? Find a new vet that doesn't give you a stupid answer, you can see yourself someting IS wrong with your doggie...
