My wife's son recently moved in with us after being away for 8 years. His eating habits at his previous home consisted of anything from McDonalds to pizza. Since he's been here, his appetite has been less than good. He's 11 and at that age, loves junk food, but when real nutritious food is given to him, he'll do anything or make up any excuse not to eat it. The food isn't THAT bad since my wife and I eat healthy. What can we do to get him to eat the right foods?

it's up to the adults to make the proper decisions for children as they surely do not know what's best for them. only buy nutritious foods to keep in the house, eventually he will eat them after going to bed hungry several nights in a row. don't cave in, that's one of the many problems with today's youth parents let the children walk all over them.

Don't take him to fast food places and don't keep junk food of any kind in the house. He might protest and miss and a few meals but he will eventually get used to the food you give him and eat good healthy food instead of junk. If his habits are going to change now is the best time to do it before he becomes a teenager. The sooner in life a child learns to eat properly the better off he/she will be. It will also be important to talk to his teachers at school and his friends parents so that he isn't getting junk food from them either. Explain the situation and what you are trying to do for him. Any sane person would be supportive of the no junk food goal.

Dont take that from him, set down the law and tell him straight out either he eats the food given to him or he makes his own money to buy all the junk food he wants, or he can just starve 1 of the 3 and at the age of 11 hes not gonna find a job and hes also not gonna wanna starve so he has no other option.

By healthy do you mean meat, veggies and fruits or tofu and sprouts? It isn't easy to get kids to eat meat and veggies if they have been allowed fast food most of the time. Maybe you can compromise and agree to a pizza night if he will eat meat and veggies too. Afterall, pizza isn't the worst thing he could ask for. He isn't likely to be receptive to a sudden and complete change in his diet. Encourage him to try new things at your house by offering rewards such as foods or activities he enjoys. Make a chart to keep up with the healthy things he tries to allow both of you to see his progress. He will know when he is close to his reward and it can help develop healthy eating habits. Good luck.

Do not feed him the junk, he will soon get hungry and eat what you serve.... let him know there is no alternative and that you are very concerned about his health

Start to intoduce the health foods to him every day one portion at a time. maybe one slice of pizza and a salad or bowl of fruit. Once the body has made a 'blue print' with the intake of healthy food he will naturally reach for it when hungry

The problem is that once you get hooked on junk food, its hard to get off of it, I know becuase I have been their. What got to eat more healther is my parents making me. Its sucked at first but I got used to and it's not like we didn't eat out any more. We still ate out just not as much.

Limit the amount of junk food in your house. Pack him healthy lunches when he goes back to school.

I've seen this thing in Oprah that they put nothing but junk food in their house that to the point that it wasn't very appealing.. it's like getting sick of it... I don't know if it will work for you.

good luck
