Many Christians of all denominations pray ("say a few religious words" as you put it) before a meal; the sign of the cross is mainly practiced in sacramental churches--which includes primarily Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans/Episcopals, and Lutherans.
Catholics and Orthodox are most consistent about making the sign of the cross.

Regardless of religious faith or creeds, many people usually pray before meals or partaking food.
The 'Sign of the Cross' is a manual insignia or ritual performed --before and after prayers or Mass-- by the [Western] Roman Catholics, the [Eastern] Greek Orthodox Catholics, the Lutherans, the Episcopalians, the Anglicans and some Methodists. While doing the sign they invoke the Trinitarian formula.
Among its others uses, the sign is also done to ward off trouble or fear or temptations...
Peace be with you.

While both Protestants and Catholics should say grace before meals, only Catholics begin and end their prayers with the sign of the cross.

Protestants do pray before they eat, but doing the cross sign is a Catholic and Orthodox tradition. I have never seen a Protestant do it.

Catholics and even protestants do that. I was a protestant and I used to do that. But when I read Bible and when I came to know the real truth, I know it is all a waste rituals. But only a prayer as per God's will be granted. If you have a sincere prayer that only God will hear. Not the rituals will help us.
They do all these just for their mind satisfaction.

Mostly just Catholics, or the Orthodox. Some protestants - conservative Lutherans mostly - will, but most won't.

Catholics are the ones mostly do that. Generally I will quietly pray my grace and eat. Generally most won't even notice that I do it.
