A typical example: My cat will jump on the sofa, make itself comfortable next to you and sleep. At the slightest movement she'll jump and attack a limb, dig in deep and sometimes draw blood.

She's also known to attack when we're least expecting it, which now makes us nervous around her. Does she want to play? Each time she attacks we yell and shake her away, but doesn't seem to be helping.

Anyone have any successful suggestions?

This is normal for a cat. Yes-she wants to play. So play as much as you can. But when she hurts you tell her NO loudly enough to make her stop. In a crunch, try a water bottle that you can squirt at her. You don't actually have to get her wet-she will be terrified. I usually just say ssssssssssssssssssssss real loud like a snake and all my cats stop immediately whatever they are doing.

The above answer is correct. However keep in mind that some cats, especially ones with a feral background are naturally very aggressive and may never become "tame".

My cat use to bite me now and then, Its important to be quite firm to put a stop to it, i think she is trying to dominate you and you need to show her you are the boss! stop any game and give her a firm NO showing you are really angry, she will soon learn this is not acceptable behaviour.
Another suggestion I was told at puppy school if your pup bites you is to make a cry or yelping noise so they realise they have hurt you. Good luck enjoy your kitty she sounds like a rascal like mine!:)

She might be trying to play with you...or just being plain mean...

But when she is asleep and the slightest movement and she attacks...Well thats instinct..Its like she thinks your arm or hand..or finger is her prey..

But the best way to punish he is to get a spray bottle (like when you spray plants with water and ****...) from walmart in the hair or plant section...Fill the bottle up with water and everytime she gets in trouble or attacks you...spray it at her...

She will hate that and will learn that when she attacks...she will get sprayed...
