Ford claims ranger gets up to 29 mpg. Window sticker in 1990 read same. I have driven a 1990 Ranger for 17 years. It has 317,000 miles on it. It has been driven from NC to Ca. Serviced regularly. At no time have I ever gotten close to this kind of mileage. I average 20-21 mpg. Is there a Ranger that gets up 29 mpg ?

Does your's have the smallest engine, and do you drive with the AC off, do you drive no faster than 50mph? Are you a professional driver. What rear end gear ratio do you have?

These are all things that will affect mileage. When Ford or other car manufacturers have cars tested for the mileage rating, you know they are all trying to get the highest numbers that they can. If your Ranger had the most economical set up, and you're driving on level roads at a steady speed, then you may be able to reach the 29 miles per gallon.

good luck.

It's how you drove it... If I drove around in the area where I'm at, actually I'd do about 22 MPG, and get about 27 (which was highway at that time) on the interstate with a 4cyl and manual transmission. (I previously owned a 89 ranger with the 4cyl and manual)

Ford isn't claiming 29mpg, the federal government roadtested the truck and got that.... big difference... but people have been coming down on the EPA testing as the driving scenario they used to use was good in the 1980s but not now... and is why the highway has gone down to 26MPG for the 2008 model year (where all cars have gone down actually) with a new test driving scenario.

But the real test on fuel economy is how you drive, when you upshift (upshift times are reported in the owners manual for getting better fuel economy on a manual), how well you keep up the vehicle as well as other variables.

You have to blame the EPA for this unrealistic claim, in reality you have minus about 4 to 5 MPGs to get close to a real number, of course I assume you drive in a mild and safe manner.

I get 35 out of my ranger, but there are so many variables. Such as your air filter, spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, oil, and most of all HOW YOU DRIVE.
