I've had both and still get to drive both. Get the 240sx. Its cheaper and easier to work on. Its also better for learning track skills in. The power of the Z32 is a bit of a crutch. Don't be in such a hurry to mod the car either. The biggest upgrade you can ever do is investing in your driving skills.

RPM's needed to drift and cost of tires at least two tires a night and what you have to do with handbrake and clutch to get the car to rotate. keep a drift car and a street car seprate. I am doing a 300zx 2+2 to twin turbo conversion done properly that would cost you over $10,000 in parts alone starting with a JDM front clip from Japan. 240 SX were very slow stock so if you find a good one and motor you will be out 3,000 or 4,000 to modify it for drifting then break something and not be able to get to work. ONE word of advice "you gotta pay to Play" 1990 cars are 18 years old and parts are getting scarce.

well if you had a sr20det in the 240sx it would be faster and it is great for drifting but if you turbo'd up the 300zx it would be fast too but if you want to drift, go with the 240 it has good handling and its worth what you pay. The zx is a dual overhead and its just plain fast the way it is if you want a turbo it will be faster that the 240 but cant handle as well and isnt as good on gas but good for a strait race.

love the 300's but just know that they are heavy cars and the engine compartment is extremely tight so its a little more difficult to mod etc and i could be wrong but im pretty sure theyre more expensive all around than the 240's...
the 240's with the sr20's are like the staple of the amateur drifters... if you wanted to be a little more original (albeit less cheap) you could go with an rb25 out of a skyline and have yourself a nice inline six in there

in the end your call... kind of a style vs cost thing here
(p.s. the convertible 300zx are damn sexy but good luck finding one)

The 240 is your best bet for an all-around car. It's more agile because of it's lighterweight and there are more engine options for it.
