I'm sure there's a good reason, but it seems to be a rather bad idea. Isn't burnung rubber bad? Serious answers only please.

Rubber is used in solid fuel rockets because is flexible, and it can be burned, (serve as part of the reducer in the 'redox` mixture.)
The flexibilty is sought because fractures in a solid fuel charge offer unpredictable and dangerous variations in burning rate and therefore pressure.

I'm sure there is a good reason too, though I'm not sure what it is. However, as far as: "but it seems to be a rather bad idea. Isn't burning rubber bad? " there is a huge difference between a pile of old tires burring in a junk yard (bad) and a rocket motor (there must be a good reason)
