The neurologically based mental diseases are genetic. Almost everyone with refractory or recurrent major depression, bipolar, schizophrenia has relatives with one of these three. They are thought to be related in some way. Social anxiety tends to be tied more to life experience, although there may also be a genetic link. My dad had depression, same with his mother, his sister is some kind of crazy, my mom's brother is bipolar, my cousin is bipolar, I am bipolar, my other cousins and my brother are fine. Most kids with an MI parent are fine.

My dad was Bipolar, with a touch (BIG touch) of Addictive personality disorder.

I, myself, have Borderline Personality Disorder & possibly narcissistic personality disorder to boot. What fun! I should also mention though that I have 2 brothers and they're both "normal" lol.

But for the most part, I'm fine and well adjusted and so are my two kids :D Don't sweat it. It's all about CHOICES.

My father is schizophrenic. My mother is an alcoholic with Major Depression(depression probably came first not alcoholic), Mom is also a victim of Sex assault as a young girl. I have traits similar to both parents but I have the ability to self assess myself and ask my spouse to double check me from time to time just to re-affirm my thoughts and ideas. I have anxiety disorder and take Paxil 20 mg. nightly to assist with fear and panic attacks. My brother recently had his first panic attack and was also prescribed Paxil for his anxiety disorder, so I attribute our similar diagnoses to genetics and environment. Highly genetic though IMO.

My dad was a suicidal bipolar who went crazy. My mom had a twitching disorder through nervous breakdowns as a child. I inherited my mom's disorder and it grew worse through prescription drugs. Fortunately I weaned myself off those drugs and it made my life much better.

My father has bi polar and I grew up wathching his manic highs and lows along with drinking. I was always scared the medication i had to give him when he was unwell (he would only trust me) would one day be given to me, it was upsetting to watch, uncanily I was the only person that had tolerance and understanding of my Dad, he has and always will be my hero. I was ill after having my son and lived with bi polar undiagnosed for 6 years ( i don't remember alot) Diagnosed in 2005 ! I support my dad and vice versa , he is the only person I can identify with , we understand each other, we have lived 2 hours apart in my illness but there is always the phone!!! we are the champions is our motto

I have GAD. None of my family has been diagnosed with anything but my dad was an alcoholic. He is now sober but I think there were other things that drove him to drink.
