Long-distance sniper record
A record of 35 years standing, for the longest combat kill by a sniper, was broken during Operation Anaconda by a Canadian sniper from Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), using MacMillan long-range TAC-50 .50-calibre rifles. The record was set by Corporal Rob Furlong at a confirmed distance of 2,430 metres (1.51 miles). The target was a Taliban fighter armed with an RPK machine gun.

A five-man Canadian sniper team recording the new distance record and more than 20 kills were given Bronze Stars from the U.S military for their actions in the operation. Team members were MCpl Graham Ragsdale (Team Commander), MCpl Tim McMeekin, MCpl Arron Perry, Cpl Dennis Eason, and Cpl Rob Furlong. The previous record was set in 1967 by U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, using a Browning M2 .50-calibre BMG machine gun mounting a telescopic sight. The distance was 2250 metres (1.40 miles). Hathcock was one of several individuals who employed the Browning M2 machine gun in a sniping role. This success led to the adoption of the .50-calibre BMG cartridge as a viable anti-personnel and anti-equipment sniper round.

depends on the weapon used, and the skill of the shooter. But there is a new sniper rifle that just came out that can easily hit a human sized target at well over 2,000 yards. I'm not sure what size round it fired. I do know that a talented sniper with a 50 cal. rifle can hit a man on the other side of a small valley, can't hardly see him. Most soldiers carry a M4 or M16, and these can go out to 600-800 yards. But train for only 350 yards.

that all depends on the weapon, and if there isa scope or not. there is no set distance. all weapons are different, and assistance from a scope makes a big difference. 300 yards with a rifle is pretty good, but times have changed, the equipment is more accurate, the bullets more powerful and designed for better accuracy, and there is not set gauge, unless you ave a specific weapon in mind, then you have to check on that weapons design statistics for such things, all available apon purchase or from someone in the know about such a weapons performance.but

The effective range of the bullet. It really depends on how they are going to continue to classify the record. "Cheater" scopes already exist on fighter jets (refered to as gun snakes on the HUD which moves around like a snake to show where the bullets will go), and those could be mounted on a vehical. Who knows if the military will declare those types of targeting to be in the record books.

Some of the "records" of snipers in the previous wars were featured in one Mythbuster show, and the guys were not able to duplicate the said feats of markmanship.

So- if the Mythbusters debunked the well established records, where can we research the non debunked records to answer your question?
