The size of their writings. I personally have found some of the shorter, lesser known Books of the Minor Prophets, to be very enlightening. I especially am fond of the Book of Amos.

And they did not write about events after they happened. For example... the message Amos was giving was to stop ignoring God since things are going so well. He was giving the people a warning. Not writing a history narrative.

you can compare these prophecies to events in your life. What were major and what was the minor. But the difference between a major and minor prophet in the bible are some to the prophecy that occurred had a significant. for example the destruction of Jerusalem in 607 B.C.E. This period started to the time of the gentile times. That means Gods government was longer on earth but in heaven. When gentile time end, Jesus Christ will be enthrone in heaven. But that will take 2520 years. For more information visit this website www.watchtower.org and you should search for the ends of the gentile time and the enthronement of Jesus Christ.

Probably had something to do with how long the establishment put up with their prophesying. This usually is in direct proportion to the length of the prophet's lifespan! The longer they managed to evade the establishments wrath, the more 'major' they were considered.

The major ones told major stories after the fact, while the minors told minor tales after the fact. It's easy to prophesy after something already happened.
