Why is Jesus name the only name used as a swear? I find it interesting that the bible says not to take the Lords name in vain and here we are thousands of years later using His name as a swear. Think about it honestly and you could come to the conclusion that this is a prophesy fulfilled. So many people say that Jesus was just a good person and people say that Ghandi and Buddah and Muhammad were to but it is Christ name that we use in vain and the bible calls him Lord. Now lets be honest is this a coinsidence?

OMB, I was thinking the same thing. Words are just words, its the meaning behind the words that do the damage.

Maybe you should approach this commandment from a different direction.

If we take upon us the name of Deity (such as profess to be his followers) but don't keep his commandments, can't that also be considered taking the LORD's name in vain?

Or perhaps if we use the name of Deity too often it will lose it's specialness - become profane. In order to avoid this, the Jews substituted many words (such as Lord) when refering to the Father. The modern JKV Bible follows this tradition.

Prophecies are nothing more then self fulfilled predictions and so anything happening can be seen as a prophecy fulfilled and I suspect that the use of the words "Jesus" and "God" as profanity is simply based on the fact that it was done by early Christians who wanted to find extreme ways to express themselves and the most extreme way they could find to express themselves was to take words from their most cherished beliefs and use them as profanity. This became a trend and is why it is now common place. It has nothing to do with some magical prophecy.Perhaps tomorrow you should go to the ocean and start pouring blood into the sea so that you can say, "See!Another prophecy fulfilled".

God said that, so it is Gods name, Jesus too
They don't use Ghandi, Buddah, and Muhammads name in vain it is just God and Jesus
No coinsidense..........
That is the way Satan has devised it into the mouth of all the people to curse God
We should put a watch over our mouth

The actual Hebrew text of the 2nd commandment says:

Thou shalt not take name of the lord your god, Yahweh, in vain.

This excludes every other utterance of what modern day judeo-christians claim is blasphemy.

If someone says "Jesus CHRIST!!" when they stub their toe or "God $%# it!" when their co-workers let them down they are in the clear according to the original text of the Bible.

Moreover, using the word "god" in any such way is beside the point. God is not a name... it's a title, like Sr. Manager of sales, Paul. Instead it's Lord god, Yahweh. If one were really to break the 2nd commandment and blaspheme they would have to say "Yahweh #$%@ it!" I mean, when it comes down to it, "God" is a very vague word... Which one are we talking about after all?

Because, silly, that's the predominant religion in the culture you've lived your entire life in.

If you actually study language from countries where Christianity is not in the majority, you don't find them using Christian deities in their expressions.

Maybe you should try acknowledging the existence of some of these other 190 or so countries on the planet, before you jump to conclusions about "prophecies fulfilled".

Not at all a coincidence !

God's pure spirit will resides within each normal human mind. This is the "still small Voice of God" --hardly ever directly heard in a human mind, but Jesus is also here as He the Spirit of Truth (John 16:7-16) and He makes Real God to you in your super-conscious soul.

Thus all who curse Jesus do it knowingly (super-consciously in soul) They have perverse evil souls. The soul is judged by God and Jesus. These who curse Jesus do know that He is our Creator Father and they choose to hate him as each human has freewill to accept or reject our loving and merciful Creator Father-Son Jesus.

Each human being is endowed in soul to know Who their Creator Father is ! by the Divine Spirit will of God within !

There are TWO persons you can never run away from:
GOD and yourSelf as a Spirit of God Directed soul.

Peace and progress,

It's not the only way one can take His name in vain. When He is blamed for all of the evil in the world -- such as saying stuff like, "it was God's will that her son died" or "God didn't want me to pass that exam in school" -- that is also using his name in vain. God is light...in him there is no darkness....therefore he cannot will evil. He does allow it IF it is for someone's greater good. He alone can take the results of evil and transform it into something good.

I think you are on the right path. The tongue can be a wicked tool.I have done it on occassion,2-4 times a year, but I ask the Lord to forgive me,and I do not make it a practice. What ticks me off,is when some Christians think saying for crying out loud,or some thing like that is related to Christ.

It means the swearing of things you have done and claiming to be true in the name of God. That is prohibited by God. Do not swear in the name of God if you are not really sincere from the sworn which you have made. Your swearing is useless and no truth a bout it.
