Where did God's name go?

I was reading the "New Revised Edition" of the King James bible and I looked at Psalms 83:18 where I know my old King James Bible listed God's name as "Jehovah", but now it just says "the Lord". Where did Gods name go? Why was it removed and by whom? Does anyone else find this offensive?

When a scripture states That men may know that thou, whose name alone is _______" I expect that Jehovah wanted his name known. The term "God" can refer to many different Gods (Rah, Budda, Allah, Zeus ect" and the term "Lord" can refer to members of Royalty in many different countries.

Its like someone speaking about you and saying "My friend whose name is "A Human" came over yesterday. Would you be confused about who they are talking about? I know I would be, I have many "Human" friends.

And If you think the Bible is just "words on a page" why bother to answer this question at all?

To all those who say that Jehovah is not Gods name and that it is just an English "corruption" let me point out two FACTS:

1: Christians speak all languages, so whatever translation in your language is appropriate please use it.
2: "Lord" and "God" are also not names but you prefer to use a title instead of a name. How sad.

Yes, I find it extremely offensive. The truth is that the name "Jehovah" has become Politically incorrect. The publishers of the "New Revised" King James Bible and also the New International Version (The NIV, which has also been changed in the same manner) have decided to cower to financial reasons and have changed the Bible in a very fundamental and serious way in order to keep selling their product. Conservative Christian religions such as Jehovah's Witnesses and others still use God's name and because of their aggressive proselytizing some people do not want the God that they believe in to be named Jehovah. So these publishers ill advisedly removed God's name from his own Bible. May Jehovah have mercy on their souls.

Try to remove the name "Allah" from the Qur'an and see how the Muslims react. Too bad we don't have that kind of zeal for our God!!

Just words on a page in a book.the meaning of it is whats relevant(to those who believe).and no it is not offensive to me.The English language has changed since the kjv was first printed,but the old kjv was translated from Latin.Just another form of translation, to our modern English.Whats wrong with having a bible that people don't have to struggle to read in the first place, Gutenberg bibles were the first attempts at allowing the bible to be read by all by mass producing the Gutenberg bible, from Latin to German.no difference with the modern versions of the bible, the original English the bible was written in, has become archaic.So a easier to understand version, if you call a stone a rock does it change the original meaning of the word? no.its still a stone, even if you call it a stone.So Jehovah to the lord .same meaning different word.

I understand your chagrin, but keep this in mind.

The Almighty (whatever you call Him) existed in full undiminished splendor before anything was created! Language or the concept of it did not come after humans were created an eternity after. The name of the Lord similarly came about eons and an eternity after the Unborn One's Mighty Existence that has been present for ever!!

If a lady has several children and they all call her by a different endearment or name, the oldest calls her Mother and the youngest mommy... does it make any difference? Even our names are given to us. They are really not a part of us. If you or I were born in another culture or faith, your name would be certainly different.

I understand your frustration, but it is important to realize that the Lord or YHWH knows who is being called when you call Him Almighty, and so do you. So, what is the issue. Mom is going to respond whether you call her mummy, mommy, mama or what have you, and in all cases knows who is being called and who is calling. Even before the words could be properly formed, the baby communicates with the mom.

So is the case with the Lord. Let us not argue about it. It is there in all glory. Whatever name you give Him Almighty, it becomes glorious by virtue of who is being called. It is HIM that is the essence, not the name.

All names that get associated to Him thus become holy and that is how I see it!

i'm sorry, but "jehovah" isn't even god's name. it's merely a english corruption of the hebrew tetragrammaton "YHVH," which can also be pronounced "yahweh" or "yod heh vau heh." it is as close as the tongues of man can come to the name of god. hebrew pronunciation is not set in stone because, like every other language, there are many dialects and local customs pertaining to pronunciation. what you should really find offensive is that you haven't taken the time to really know your bible. if it is truly more than just words on a page to you, then it is your duty to search out the truth. the bible as presented today is at best a corruption of the original texts. man has found it far to profitable a book to not tamper with it. i don't think your version of god wants lazy, uneducated sheep as followers. take the hard road of faith and find out the truth behind your scriptures. don't just settle for what is handed to you in a book.

It is for the sake of consistency. For the most part, the King James followed Septuagint convention and translated YHVH as "LORD" (Kyrios in the LXX). But there were many translators working on the KJV, and a few of them rendered YHVH as "Jehovah." Your NRE decided to keep all of the instances of YHVH as "Lord."

Pfalmes LXXXIII That men may knowe, that thou, whose name alone is IEHOVAH: art the most High ouer all the earth.
